Iwill MPX2 with AwardBIOS and I just tried to flash an update and I received a Write-Protect error.

I have scoured the manual and can't figure out how to change this.

Any thoughts?

If there isn't a settings under advanced chipset features for it then try disabling system bios cacheable and be certain you are using the correct commands with the flash utility. That fails e-mail their tech support or ask over@2CPU.

Or check the jumpers on your motherboard. There should be one near the CMOS battery that allows you to disable write protection. I had this too with my old PC's motherboard (Asus TX97-E)... Good ol' days. :p

AristoV300You can't flash via Windows?

I don't believe that AwardBIOS, at least the version for my motherboard (IWill MPX2), has a windows-based BIOS flash utility. In this case, it's a moot point, as Windows is not yet installed. Thanks for your thoughts, though.

I couldn't find a de-facto write protect setting. Also, I tried removing the battery and a reset of the CMOS settings and this didn't solve the problem, either. At your suggestion, I tried to disable system bios cacheable and this wasn't successful, either. I was holding out hope for that!

I would have thought this was the case, too. The only jumper by the battery is to reset CMOS settings. I have checked the motherboard manual and verified the pupose of every set of jumpers depicted and I also visually checked the motherboard to validate that there aren't any extra undocumented jumpers.

This really has me stumpped. I may just have to e-mail tech support.

I am looking for any suggestions, even to the point of suggest how I might find this (keywords) via Google.

Thanks all!

Ok, sounds completely insane but I just got it to work.

If I booted from a Windows ME boot disk, I got a Write Protect error on the BIOS.

When I booted from a Windows 98 boot disk, I was able to successfully flash the BIOS.

Chalk another headache up to Windows MigraneE.
