Just took the plunge

Have you bought these parts already? Because I can't see spending $250 on an SLI motherboard and then using a single graphics card.

Yes, I've already bought them. I should probably have mentioned that I plan on going SLI in the future, just waiting for nVidia to release information about their next video cards.

what a dumb purchase on the mb. tri-sli? really? haha gl. "sli in the future" is not too bright either...

and u also bought SLI ram 4gb for $99 AR when they can be found for $60AR.

There's a difference between SLI in the future and "SLI by buying a 2nd copy of my existing card."

If he buys the two top-end 9-series cards he'll be running SLI in the future and he'll have basically the maximum performance available at the time. It's not what I'd do, and it will be expensive, but it's not dumb if he wants the cream of the crop. It's the only option.

If he were planning to buy a second 8800GTS to put in his rig and expected a world of improvement, that would be the "SLI in the future" that's often (legitimately) ragged on.

The real question is why not buy an SLI motherboard, even if it's not used? How many PCI devices will I have? Two...a sound card and a network card, and even then I might by a PCI-e one. So really...what's the big deal?

Last time I bought cheap RAM with lots of rebates I got bit in the ass. Both sticks died (Corsair XMS), as did one of my friends. I still haven't gotten the rebate, either. As for buying new video cards. I'll definitely wait a reasonable amount of time until after they release new cards. It sucked that after I bought my GTS, about 2 months later they released the GTs for much much less.

Maybe i'm missing something, but I don't see what justifies spending $260USD for an LGA775 board.

so you're saying that he might buy a gf9 (for ex) in the future. then why is he buying the mb at its high price now? might as well stay and wait until he has a use for sli to buy the MB right?

because you're paying the huge premium for the marketing done on it @ $260 for a motherboard when u can get the same or better performance on a $100-$150 mb.

who says your ram is so great? is it because it says SLI on it? i bet haha.
Patriot
among many others.

I didn't say it was better? You hate it when people spend a little more to use a brand that they like? I've heard good things about Patriot, Mushkin, etc. but god forbid this crazy concept of brand preference.

Seriously, why all the 780i hate here? Aside from the few DOAs and the like, it looks like a solid board with some nice features. I'm not here to sell you one so stfu. $260 doesn't seem that bad for motherboards seeing as how the Strike is still in the 3s.

I need a motherboard upgrade badly. This goddamn Asus I've have for the past one and a half years is pissing me off. It doesn't boot properly (have to play with the power and reset buttons to get it to POST_ and I've RMAed it 3 times. I'm buying a Wolfdale no matter what and need a new motherboard that supports 1333MHz and works properly. Threw in a little extra money. Why? Because I can. Who would have thought?

You're right about the price, though. I'll go tell me girlfriend to stop buying the jewelry wherever she does and tell her to go shop at Wal-mart for it. As long as it sparkles, right?

TehJustinator you can buy whatever you want and it make sense as long as it good technology.

Make sense? Yeah coz people tend to mix technology with affordability, but affordability is matter of the person?s financial status and a technology issue.

So if what you bought works well and you can afford it, calling you dumb is simply Rude.

The only thing that I personally learned is to avoid buying computer parts with the idea of future upgrade (unless the future means couple of months).

In most cases when the future upgrade becomes present there is better cheaper technology and thus the money thus was wasted to begin with. As mentioned above the LGA 775 is already kind of old.

If you don't need SLI, then there's no reason to pay for an SLI board. You only need SLI if you're rendering 3D at HIGH RESOLUTIONS -- think 1920x1200 or higher. Anything less and you're not really getting your money's worth. Though, thats all subjective, so buy what you want, its your money. 😉

Don't forget a good cooler for that Wolfdale...
$35 - Scythe SCNJ-1100P Ninja Plus Rev.B CPU HSF (optional $7 Thermalright LGA775 Bolt-Thru-Kit; recommended if using w/ quadcore)
$45 - Tuniq Tower 120 CPU HSF
$46 - Thermalright Ultima 90 CPU HS + FBA09A12M - Z ($3)
$50 - ZEROtherm Nirvana NV120 120mm 2-ball UFO Bearing / Transparent CPU Cooler ($10 MIR)
$55 - Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme CPU HS + Scythe S-Flex Fan SFF21E ($15)

I have no hate for the 780i, I just think that the motherboard you have chosen is not worth the $$$ at $260. I have the same feelings for X38 boards as well.
