Just took a pound of dust out of the PC, and reapplied some pasty goodness...

Couple of questions...

Does it reduce the air intake drastically?

And,

Do you put it over the fan or behind it? I ask, because I have LED's on the fan, and if it's infront, it'll kill the lighting, but if it's behind the fan, it'll be ok.

Thanks for the help!

It reduces the fan's output, but only slightly. I've been using homemade fan filters (made out of the same thing that their filters are, just without the plastic) for years now, and my system is as cool as anyone else's, it seems. I'd guess that it reduces the output (input, really) by around 10-12%. And they mount on either side of the fan; whichever you choose.

I didn't like the fan filters that most places sell. I ended up using, of all things, pantyhose on my old PC. They were less restrictive to the airflow and were actually better at containing the dust. The only down side is that they stretch out easily so you can't really take them off and put them back on. You pretty much have to just blow the dust out into a garbage can with compressed air while the material is still on the fan.

Either that or just make sure to clean your case about once every two months.

Edit: I always put them on the output side of the fan, as its less restrictive to push the air through the filter than trying to suck it through the filter.

i just did the same!! got my northwood from around 48C idle to 37C at idle
The real big change was from ~65C at 100% to the 48C now :)
It is so nice to not hear a jet plane taking off all day!

Yep and the bonus is a cooler computer room.

My Northwood was never especially hot but I am hoping my new Conroe replacement is even cooler.

I think my 2 DVD's and 4 HD's add more heat than anything else. Although I gott say that an extended gaming session definitely has my videocard pumping out the heat, lol.
