I learned a TON of what I would consider to be practical and highly important life skills. I now feel prepared to act in an emergency situation, or at least know the basics that may save someone's life.

The crazy thing is that I'm 25 and never learned any of this before. Sure we all see CPR on TV but it isn't practical experience. There were other safety/situational considerations that were also discussed.

Why isn't basic CPR/first aid taught in schools? I think this should be taught to children every year during school starting at first grade.

For those that argue that there may be liability involved, please read about Good Samaritan laws.

As a last note, our instructor (an EMT) noted that bad CPR is better than no CPR.

I took them, then I forgot them.

I had to take them for my parents' restaurant biz. They don't speak english so I had pleasure/pain of taking them myself.

Good stuff indeed.

Ah.. I remember, I took it one-on-one with this hot red head chick. It was saturday morning so I was the only student for the session. We went through the video & lessons just me and her.

I still remember what she said when I had to demonstrate the heimlich maneuver on her..

Her: Okay, now I want you to put your arms around me from behind
Me: :D
Her: Okay, a little tighter.. now I want you to put your left leg BETWEEN MY LEGS, so you can support me as the victim.
Me: :D
Her: Okay, squeeze tighter.. push tighter!
Me: :Q :D:beer:

weird - so it seems to be present at some schools and not others... It seems like they should almost make it a part of a gym class or something and refresh every year for an hour or two. Luckily I've never been in a situation where knowing CPR would have been helpful and hopefully I never will be, but who knows...

It is very worthwhile and although you probably will never have to use it I still think it is important for many poeple to know it just in case. It might save somebody's life someday, like when my buddy, Robert, tried to commit seppuku and I have him CPR.

I love you,

So... all we've established so far is that the OP's school sucks?

Ditto: the school I went to and the school I teach at now have CPR taught.

I was never taught CPR when I was in school (I'm in college right now).

It would certainly be a good idea though.

$40 will have you had at your local Red Cross.

I was taught CPR at my high school. They never tell you some things though...like you will more than likely crack many ribs doing it, or the person has a very good chance of vomiting while you are doing it because of air in the stomach.
