Today, Georgia Tech announced to the news media that approximately
3,000 current and former employees, predominantly in the School of
Electrical and Computer Engineering, may have had their personal
information compromised by unauthorized access to a Georgia Tech
computer
account by unknown sources outside the Institute. The
information included names, addresses, Social Security numbers and
other potentially sensitive information
including approximately 400
state purchasing card numbers. A letter has been sent to those
individuals who may have been affected. The purchasing cards have
been cancelled.

Although Georgia Tech is unaware of any misuse of the information
from the compromised computer account, as a precautionary measure,
individuals sent letters were encouraged to notify the appropriate
credit reporting agencies that their personal information may have
been compromised. Additional information on dealing with identity
protection matters can be found at www.protect.gatech.edu.

I just hope I wasn't one of the victims :(

No big deal. I've had my information stolen a couple of times yet I still haven't been screwed over. Knock on wood.

Dont worry. This happened to me a while back shortly after i finished grad school at berkeley. I just monitored my credit for about 6 months (berkeley paid for it, no FICO though). Nothing happened. I would ask GT if they are going to allow the same thing.

As I see it theres 2 ways to proceed when something like this happens.
You can either set up a credit monitor and keep an eye on your credit and hope for the best, or you can run out now and do your damnedest to run your credit into the ground. Get CC's, max then out, default, etc etc.

While the first option is the best for the long term, the second option gives the most satisfaction right now.

happened at texas a few years back when i went there. if you were one of the ones affected, just call up one of the major credit places and tell them to put a fraud alert on your account.
