Just made the big leap from CRT to LCD - 19" LG L1910B(K). The resolution is set to 1280x1024@60Hz and LCD panel is connected via DVI to video input.

Everything works great except when I watch DVD movies or AVI. The movies quality appears very granulated with squarish artifacts. For example while watching a movie like "The Matrix," objects like walls or people's faces appear chunky and not-smooth. Also, the color depth and quality seem poor. It's almost as if you were watching TV through an old antenna.

I'm watching DVD media through both InterwinDVD 4 and PowerDVD 5 and same problems appear for both players. With AVI or other media, I'm using VLC media player . The only thing that seems to help within VLC is if I turn on "post processing" to max, but even then the quality looks poor-average.

The LCD itself i believe is an S-IPS matrix. Running win2k and the video card is an MSI GeFORCE NX6600GT. The DVD-ROM drive is an GSA-4161BB 16X. Videos are running via fullscreen mode. I believe UDMA33 is turned on for the DVD drive.

Is this issue a configurational error (drivers? hardware acceleration?) or just what's standard and expected for LCD type displays? Perhaps the LCD is crappy? I payed decent bucks for it, I hope that's not the case or I'm considering an exchange.

Any tips? Thanks.

There are monitors that have good movie quality and there are ones with bad movie quality but great static display quality.
In your case I suspect it is the slow response time of your monitor. 25ms is insufficient for motion pictures

You can have a look at the anandtech LCD reviews for 19" monitors such as the Dell Ultrasharp FP1905
They have a dedicated movie playing test

As AnnihilatorX said, there are good LCDs and there are bad LCDs

I like Dell LCDs; I have a 2005FPw and I use it to watch HDTV ... looks VERY NICE

Your LCD may be of low quality; I don't know that one. However, the fact that your LCD shows squarish artifacts cannot be the panel's fault, so you at LEAST have some other sort of hardware or configuration error (maybe with your card).

i second that .. when watching movies high FPS video and games, you will find that the quality degrades big time (well enough) .. i am soon to be getting the new LG the one that was on the anandtech review .. but they have a new one which is rated at 8ms .. that is going to be sweet .. just out of interest are you using Ms Cleartype

Quality of your video cable, graphics card, DVD software, DVD drive, LCD, etc
are all factors. To me it sounds like the video quality is worse then it should be,
and could possibly be improved.

But, you also said that you just moved from a CRT to an LCD. So maybe you
are used to CRT quality DVD playback?

For the record, my official opinion, as of now, is that there are no computer LCD
panels (within the price range of mere mortals) that are as as good as CRTs for
various things--DVD playback being one of them. So if you are used to CRT
quality, and are looking for the same in an LCD, you won't find it. Maybe you
already know this. The subjective part is that your own eyeballs will decide what
you are happy with. Many folks here seem to be happy with their LCDs.

Reviews that state certain LCDs are great, good, bad, etc for DVD playback are
for the most part relative--based on other LCDs. If a review includes comparison
to CRT, it's no contest.

I will go now before I cause trouble.
