Just Switched From Comcast Cable To verizon DSL

just did the switch I am tired of paying $53 a month , they keep raising the prices like every 6 months
now I have Verizon DSL 1.5/728 for $35 a month plus 1st month free and $80 rebate from Dell

btw do I need a router network card etc to get a second computer in the same house hooked up to DSL?

You will need a router to share the dsl.

Verizon DSL seems to be a mixed bag (some people have good service while others do not). I have never had the line go down and always receive close to my max throughput. Also the usenet server has very good retention.

Im getting tired of Comcast myself. ....They are jacking up prices like they are the only broadband in town. Which sometimes they are...

do you got a link to that deal i need to call up my verizon csr and change my service i'm overpaying by like 15 dollars

good luck. i had them a while back. the service went down and i was without broadband for 3 months... totally inept customer/technical support, they made comacst support techs look like CCIEs. I got my connection back when I dumped them and went with speakeasy. i'm now with comcast and would never consider dsl again...

btw, if you didn't get in on the 19.95/6 mos deal when you first signed up for Comcast, you could try calling them.

I called them up and asked if I could get in on that deal since I didn't get it originally. They gave me the run-around for awhile, but eventually got the right person, and asked what would be stopping me from discontinuing my service, and just re-upping for the reduced rate...3rd month @ 19.95 now 🙂'

worth a shot if you're stuck with comcast.

just called verizon to confirm plan change... went without a hitch if you currently paying too much i suggest you call them.

What part of Portland do you live in?

My only choices are Comcast cable internet (they want to charge me $10/mo MORE if I don't have Comcast cable TV which we don't) and DirecWAY 🙁

728 upload?
Can you verify that please?
Because I think you either mean 128 or 768.

If it's 768, that's a damn nice speed at your price.

Anyway, to share DSL onto multiple computers, you'll need a router with PPPoE capabilities I believe.
Or of course you could do 2 network cards and ICS (proxy server) if that's what you're asking.

there is no such thing as a 1.5 down/728 up, $35 dsl package from verizon.

afaik, verizon only sells three dsl packages to residential users: 768 kbps/128 kbps, $49.95; 1.5 Mbps/128 kbps, $59.95; 1.5 Mbps/384 kbps, $79.95

the prices shown are the standard rates. any other rates lower than those above usually are part of a special promotion or have a catch (i.e., $29.95 for the first six months then $49.95 thereafter or $39.95 with an annual commitment, etc.). then again, i guess there could be some new pricing that i haven't heard about (case in point, your $35 deal). so you might want to check with verizon again to find out exactly what you're getting.

p.s. i have the 1.5/128 dsl package from verizon.

edit: just read that verizon did indeed implement new speed/price changes. it's $34.95 for 1.5/128 if you qualify (cutoff distance is 12,000 ft from CO), otherwise you get 768/128. seems like i need to make a phone call! thanks for bringing it to my attention! 🙂

comcast is a POS. the connection dies like everynight on me. The tech said it was some ham radio op jamming the line. BS. They can't get the billing right too. I set up the automatic withdrawal, but it didn't withdraw for some reason, so now I have overdue balance. Moving is a pain in the @ss too. When I called to transfer my account they first disconnected the old address, then went back and reconnected the old address instead of the new one. Then they connected the new one, and when I called to disconnect the old one, they disconnected the new one, and then I had to have them reactivate the new one. Morons.
the only reason I am still with them is that my company reimburses me for $40 of internet access monthly. I am gonna switch to DSL and DirectTV one of these days.

how will it compare in speed with comcast?

I am about 8,000 feet from them

According to that link it says download speed is 320kb/s, and also says a 1mb file will take 25 seconds to download.

as i noted in my edited post above, verizon has indeed just implemented a new speed/pricing dsl package.

for new customers:
1.5 down/128 up for $34.95 for all residential customers who qualify (less than 12,000 ft from CO)
768 down/128 up for $34.95 for everyone else

for current 1.5/128 customers (like me):
you can call verizon and get your pricing changed from $59.95 to $34.95, although i believe the price change will happen automatically for all 1.5/128 users sometime in may.

there are some good threads on this topic over in the verizon forum at dslreports.com.

this is great news! gonna call tomorrow. 🙂

p.s. i think eshtog meant 128 and mistakenly typed 728.

For those that have the 29.99 plan that jumps to 49.99 after 6 months I hear you can get on this package too... Im calling tomorrow to change mine. More speed for less money, I love it.
