Just switched from cable to DSL and my Linksys WRT54G isn't working right

I've been using cable internet access for a few years now, but just switched to DSL today. I've been using a Linksys WRT54G with Sveasoft.com's firmware for the last 3-4 months with no problems at all. When the technician came, he couldn't get the DSL to work when he plugged the phone line into a DSL modem, then plug the modem into the Linksys router. He said it was because the Sveasoft firmware doesn't acceps DNS servers and I don't know if that's true or not. So he installed a modem\wireless\wired router combination box which works fine.

I plugged the Linksys' uplink port into a wired port on the combination box, thinking it wouldn't matter the the firmware couldn't accept DNS servers since it's really just a hub\switch now, but it still doesn't work right. Wired computers say the computer has limited or not network connectivity and wireless computers connect fine and get a 192.168.1.xxx address but have no internet connection.

The only thing I can think of to do is use a crossover cable between the combo box and linksys but I was told that it didn't matter what kind of cable you used, the linksys would adjust itself to either kind.

Advice?

Does that hacked firmware support PPPoE? I know I had a few on my WRT54G that didn't..

Can you post a pic of that device aw well? I want to get a look at it. Thanks!

I'm using the Alchemy version of firmware from Sveasoft.com. the features list for the firmware doesn't mention PPPoE but it does say it includes all the original Linksys features.

Here's a pic of my setup now. The cable to the Linksys is straight because I don't have a crossover cable, I've gotta get one. This is a closeup of the combo box they put in.

EDIT: The smaller black box on the top right isn't plugged into anything. That's the DSL modem that they left.

Disable your DHCP server on your WRT54G, I have a feeling your two DHCP servers may be fighting.

Also, make sure you plugged the WRT54G's LAN port into your combo modem/gateway and not the WAN(internet) port.

This way, your WRT54G will just be a wireless access point/switch and it will let the other device do all the network related stuff. (DHCP, routing, etc.)

Well I'm almost online here but have no idea why. I tried disabling the DHCP on the Linksys and that didn't work, I tried setting its IP to s static 192.168.1.100 and that didn't work, I tried a hundred other things and they didn't work. THen I uploaded Linksys' original firmware and it WORKS! Here's how it's set up now, it's all default as far as I can tell. The only difference is that its running Linksys firmware now instead of Sveasoft. Again, I have no clue why it works but it does.

Now for the funny part. I'm posting from a wireless laptop connected to the Linksys router. Wired computers either don't get any kind of IP from it or get one like 192.168.0.2 but still don't have internet access.

I have another Netgear wireless router that I replace with the Linksys about a year ago so if you want me to try something with that say so.

well now it's all working. I plugged the Netgear router into the combo box, plugged the desktop wired into the netgear, plugged the Linksys router into the netgear, connected my laptop wirelessly to the combo box and we're all online. Factory default settings on everything. DOn't ask me why but it works.... for now.

Maybe I missed it in one of your posts, but did you put the DSL modem in bridged mode?
You need to do that to disable ppoe on the DSL modem. Then you can setup ppoe in the router and all will be well.
