Just started wearing contacts, and they always make me sleepy.

I'm one week and one day into wearing contacts - Acuvue Oasys brand - and it seems that especially by the time I get home, I'm ready for bed. Contacts literally tire me out.

I have a fairly weak contact lens prescription: -2.00 in the left eye, -2.50 in the right, and very minor astigmatism.

I jumped right into wearing contacts for 12 - 16 hours at a time - are my eyes just getting used to less oxygen and the new prescription? Should I seek out a second eye doctor for another opinion and fitting?

I get the same thing. You get used to it after a while, and I don't think it's a big deal. I always assumed the extra thickness of the lens tricked your eyes into thinking that your eyelids were drooping/eyelids getting heavy/that sleepy feeling.

edit: I also notice it more when I wear older contacts as opposed to when I start using a fresh pair.

As the contacts dry, your eyes will compensate and force you to squint or blink more to make more tears. Try rewetting your contacts and you notice that sleepy feeling will go away.

Weird.

Back when I started wearing contacts (same brand, but the Advance model, mild prescription/astigmatism), I was wearing them as much as you are, and I've never had anything like that.

During the initial adjustment period (1-4 weeks depending on the person), this is rather common. Your eyes dry faster and they get less oxygen, meaning you'll get the sleepy eye feeling. If it continues after this point, visit the eye doctor. He may go with something as easy as eye drops due to dry eyes, but there's the other possibility that your prescription isn't right and is causing eye strain.

Side Note: Don't be a fucking idiot. Listen to your eye doctor. Don't 'jump right in' and start wearing contacts for 12-16 hours a day. You're overstraining your eyes. During the first week, you should probably only wear them in the evening at home. The second week, only at work 9(i.e. 8 hours). By the third or fourth week, when your eyes have adjusted, then wear them while you're awake the entire time.
