I just started getting into texas hold'em and learning the rules. I was watching the championship on espn2, and had a question about how this guy's hand was so dominant.

Player 1: 8, 5 (both diamonds)
Player 2: 6 (hearts), 4 (diamonds)

Flop: 3 (hearts), 4 (clubs), A (hearts)
Turn card: 2 (clubs)

they were saying how player 1 basically had it in the bag because of his straight. Doesn't he only have 2, 3, 4, 5? or does the ace wrap around to make A, 2, 3, 4, 5?

The river card was an Ace so didnt make a difference.

How did player one have a straight?

A can be in either the AKQJ10 straight, or the 5432A straight, but not both
by itself, its rank is the highest and never the lowest
