just started watching Caprica

This always happens to me, i find a series on Netflix that i like but is only 1 or 2 seasons long. Caprica is my newest example. too bad it didnt get ratings to keep it going. guess the BSG fans were expecting more explosions and epic space battles.

Just finished Stargate Universe last night, which concludes 16 years of Stargate movies and TV shows. Kinda sad, especially since it ended on a cliffhanger. My wife and I watched the 1994 movie, all ten seasons of SG-1, both SG-1 TV movies, all six seasons of Atlantis, and both seasons of Universe. The only thing I haven't seen was the animated series, but it doesn't look very good. I sort of wish they'd do like Firefly and make a movie to conclude the SGU story or at least resolve the cliffhanger, but that won't happen either.

We started the X-Files, and it was kind of dated and campy but also a lot of fun. Might have to see Caprica too at some point, but I'm not sure it'd be my cup of tea. I've never been really big on angsty sci-fi drama; Chloe was easily the worst character in SGU and I hated when BSG turned into a soap opera later in its run.

Meh. Your BSG description is fairly apt, because I was drawn to it for much the same reason: it was gritty, tense, deep, and all about how the characters handle the situation, aka how they mentally cope with the whole concept. It was captivating imho. Explosions and violence were a bonus.

Caprica was a different story from the get-go. It was more real-world problems for families and whatnot, set in the future.
Once it got going, I really thought Caprica became a great series that had potential had it had the viewership.
The last handful of episodes completely changed the face of the series, and yet... they were also forced to air in a way that basically said "no matter what, the show is dead, but here you go anyway" and yet they turned out to be the best episodes of the show. It was a bummer because the last episode was basically forced, they could have added an entire season but at least wanted to wrap up the plot arc since it was already understood to be canceled.

I still need to get around to finishing Jericho (there was a second season, right? I didn't finish all of Season 1, I don't think...), I did enjoy what I saw. SG:U I actually really enjoyed the whole series. Coming from SG1, I could see how some fans would be put off (it barely had that SG feel at all, based on what fans had seen up to that point)... it was more like the SG answer to BSG, and I liked the plot arcs developed. I was bummed at the conclusion because it basically left us hanging iirc.

Yeah, there were some episodes that were focused entirely on personal drama, and a lot of scenes (especially ones with Chloe) were unnecessarily drawn out. Maybe to save money so they wouldn't have to film more scenes, I don't know. The series as a whole was still good, but it didn't hold my attention as well as other shows (Stargate and otherwise). Still sad to see it canceled.

Huh - I didn't know they did that for season 3. Just keep in mind when you watch it that it was cancelled at the end of season 1, revived for a short season 2 but then cancelled again so if season 2 seems a bit off and rushed - thats because it was

Some people got all pissy about certain elements, because it didn't follow what they wanted out of the show.

If your focus is all about the sci-fi, and you get annoyed with a few "wait... huh?" moments due to odd directional shifts in the plot arcs.

But I absolutely enjoyed every moment of that series.

The very last episode wasn't the most satisfying ending to the overall story, but it felt as if it really could have been worse (or more annoying: by not even daring to provide an all-encompassing end). Even so, my opinion is this: if 99% of the ride is enjoyable and satisfying, but the very last moment of the trip resulting in a funny taste in your mouth - would you say "I wish I never partook in that adventure" ?

There have been many stories (TV, Cinema, Novels) that were amazing every step of the way... until the final moments. Not entirely satisfying ending, sure, but an enjoyable ride nonetheless.

I loved that show. I felt that scyfy gave the show no chance because it had a lousy time slot. But to me that could have been a great scifi series. A missed opportunity there IMO.

That's not the main reason I disliked BSG though. The real problem was just the declining quality of the show in seasons 3 and 4. I don't know if they ran out of money or the writers ran out of ideas, but there was a lot of padding and very little actual story later on in the show. They opened up too many plot threads and never closed most of them, so what were supposed to be huge revelations ended up losing some of their power. By the end, so many crazy things were happening that nothing surprised me anymore. I was just watching to see how it would end. If they had capped it off with a really awesome ending, that could have partly made up for it, but the ending was disappointing as well.

I'd agree with you if the only thing I disliked about BSG was its last episode. They lost something about halfway through the show's run and never got it back. Ronald D. Moore even admitted he didn't know where the show was going and that he was just making stuff up from week to week, so it doesn't surprise me that things didn't turn out so well.

This seems to be the case with a lot of these shows. I don't understand; why spend so much money only to put it in a shitty timeslot? I remember rumors circulating about BSG possibly being canceled due to budget concerns before they finally announced that they would finish the show at the end of season 4. If they're spending so much money to produce the show (and face it - BSG and SGU looked great, like movies), why not treat it like the network's flagship?

Season 3 has a fantastic beginning and end and season 4.0 is absolutely brilliant. 4.5 is ok. Season 2.5 is shit.

BSG is still the best show to ever be on tv, however. Only DS9 comes close.

Caprica was just awful. Meandering, cliched, boring plot. Too bad because Stoltz is great.

Amazing that anyone could stomach Atlantis or Universe though. Cliched and deus ex machina ridden shows through and through. At least SG-1 had some good moments.
