just started to leech my neighbors wireless network

got a new laptop and it had an internal wireless card, so i got a wireless router and started playing around. i noticed that i was zoming on the internet, like a lot faster than my wired connection. after a while i noticed that i had connected to my neighbors connection. ( i have 300k dsl and he/she has cable).

i didnt know that i was using his and not mine. so i was playing around with it and didn't know what i was doing..so one thing left to another and somehow i changed his login and don't remember what his settings were. i found out about his wireless network when i went into the wireless network setup.

this sucks arse. what should i do, i have no idea who the hell in my neighborhood has a wireless network.

2. most routers use the default password: admin

this is easy to solve, he just needs to reset his wireless router. there should be one of those buttons that you need a paperclip to push it and it will reset the router to default settings. not much you can do but if he realizes he cant access the router settings he'll reset it.

actually, i didn't change the password. in the router config page, i saw something different so i tried to put my info into it and it didn't connect so i called my dsl provider and they told me my password and now they can't connect.

Well, it's your neighbors fault for not changing his admin password and setting a WEP key. Having an open wireless network is about as safe as leaving a BMW unlocked with the keys in the ignition

As for your own setup, you could probably set it for PPPoE if you're using DSL. Put your username and password in there, CHANGE your default channel, put in a WEP key on both your router and your wireless card, and you should be all set.

my network is safe, the router doesn't broadcast, there is a ssid. it is his router that has the problem

With a Linksys, I don't think setting a WEP key matters. I have it set to mandatory and I can connect with or without WEP using my 3COM card.
