Just started Rosetta

As the title states, I just started Rosetta to try it before the December F@H race. I've uploaded one regular work unit, but my next two work units, both the graphical betas, seemed to get stuck. My first was stuck at 20% for an hour, so I killed it. My second was stuck at 1% for half an hour, so I killed it too. Is there any way to fix this, or is this just a normal bug?

Keep in mind that my rig I'm trying this on has an A64 3200+ and a gig of ram. My estimated finish speed is slightly under 3 hours.

I haven't had an issue with any units getting stuck as you describe though. I know there was (some time ago now) an issue with work units getting stuck at 1%. This issue was resolved by using the latest Boinc Client.

If you aren't using version 5.2.7 or 5.2.8, I recommend an update.

(bear in mind some of the work units comming out now take over 3 hours to complete and progress only updates in 10% increments.)

edit: It really sounds like something else was running... BOINC is VERY good at getting out of the way. check Task Manager to see what is getting the cycles.

i solved my stuck wu's by going to account preferences and changing "keep work unit in memory when suspended" to "yes".

the default is "no" which apparently has been a problem for people.

Brainwinkle, these numbers actually seem pretty normal to me.

On my X2 3800+ some of the new WUs need 35 minutes to get past the 1% mark. My P4 2,8 had a WU yesterday which needed 8 hours to complete. Usually it was 3 hours.

I know, one just doesn't like the idea of wasting CPU cycles but killing a WU too early isn't much better either. Since Rosetta released the 4.79 client, the errors have decreased a lot and I haven't had a stuck WU ever since. Just give them more time and you'll see that usually they'll run fine.

Also, depending on the BOINC client you use, the completion time might be way off the actual time. This is especially true for pre 5.x clients.

Ok, maybe I was killing them too early. I'll try to let one go longer next time. I was under the impression that Rosetta work units were similar in length.

I was messing around with detaching the project (because I had a no acount key eroor in my log) and created new problems for myself.:frown: Oh well, I think I finally fixed them. I had two files that wouldn't re-download when I attached again (aa1n0u_03_05.200_v1_3 and aa1n0u_09_05.200_v1_3). I couldn't delete them because it said that they were still in use. I finally figured out that the BOINC process was still running even after I exited it from the taskbar. I have so many work units that uploaded as failed because of file errors that I can't download any more today.

I hate Dial-up. I live in a town of 25000 people, the subdivision 1/2 a mile away has DSL, and yet we still don't. My uncle who lives miles away from a town of 2000 has DSL. Life is so unfair;).

I have the most current BOINC client (just downloaded yesterday).

Yeah, BOINC is definitely more annoying than F@H to get set up. Rosetta@Home is pretty neat, though. At least the scoring system is more fair than F@H.

Unfortunately, I'm too young for . Only 15. I did have some wine at Thanksgiving, though.

Hopefully I'll be crunching again by tommorow morning. Thank you everyone for the help.

As Sid said, just hang in. I guess all of us had probs with BOINC one way or the other. But one tends to project the BOINC problems on the BOINC projects, which isn't quite fair to the projects. I've had trouble with BOINC, too, but almost none with R@H.

Glad you joined us man!

PS: Where I come from, 15 is just the right age for a cold  ;)

Well, I finally got it working again. For the time being, I am having no problems with it. I uploaded 2 more finished work units and I am starting on a third.

 all around
