First of all, this game is challenging. That's a good thing

I'm not having a lot of fun though. I don't understand - I thought I'd really enjoy this game, but it just feels bleh. I'm killing fairly generic enemies using fairly generic weapons (sword, pistol, shotgun, etc.). Some of the moves are cool.

Am I missing something? Are the later games much different?

It was more revolutionary at the time.

The pull of the series it to present an action packed, third person adventure/hack-n-slash with quick gameplay and tight controls/combos with multiple weapons. There are other weapons later, but the starting sword/shogun are always my favorite.

If you don't like the first game, you probably won't like the rest. Nero from Devil May Cry 4 adds some new functions, but it's hardly a different game.

I'm not crazy about the mission style. Is that present in the later games?

If I remember the first DMC correctly, then yes, little has changed about the mission styles, though perhaps the missions in DMC4 are a bit more focused and less tedious.

It takes some significant time to actually feel comfortable fighting and in control of situations within DMC. I'm not sure I'd call the weapons and enemies "fairly generic". But hey, if you aren't enjoying it, it may just not be your bag.

You're right I suppose, the fighting style is definitely not generic. The enemies seem pretty uninteresting though.

I think I'd like to finish the first one, at least. By the end I should know if I'll enjoy the rest or not.

I too just started playing this game and got to mission 12. I'll honestly say it feel like a more uninteresting version of God of War. the main reason i've been playing DMC is because people talk alot about the series, i got it 4 years ago and had lost interest after the first mission lol.

GOD of WAR >>>> Devil May Cry

I tried DMC4... I got to a part where I fell into a pit 4 times in a row, and had to clear the room full of enemies every time I fell in. Stupid game design like that really annoys me, so I returned it.

I think my copy is still shrink wrapped, along with GOWI and about a dozen others. I buy way to many games and dont even play or in some cases take the wrap off. I have a spending sickness. :)

I tried the demo to DMC4 and felt pretty much the same as you describe. I guess it didn't help that I had just finished playing Heavenly Sword, which was much more fluid and polished, while the movements of the character in DMC4 seemed very stiff and rigid by comparison. Might not have been strictly fair considering it was a demo, not the full game but it still failed to really make itself stand out in my mind.

yea those parts get annoying really quick. I think that's due to the "swinging" camera angles that change without any warning.

personally I like the game, but it can get tedious at times.

The only reason to play DMC is if you like the deep combat and the difficulty level.

I personally love that and it makes it way better than GOW to me. GOW is fun and the story is much better but it is way to freaking easy even on the harder modes.

That's actually what it reminded me of, Onimusha. But I felt like the controls in Onimusha were a lot cleaner, even though you don't get guns I guess.

You try Titan mode? It wasn't too bad for most parts, but the last level is INSANE. It took me several days to beat it on Titan mode. It's not tedious, it's just challenging your reaction time and hand-eye coordination because you have to be brutally fast and efficient to get through it.

Weird. DMC is regarded as having one of the most fluid, flexiable, and deep combat systems to date, as it practically started the extreme combat genre.

Also, heavenly sword felt unbearably clunky to me. Getting Nariko to do what I wanted her to was like pulling teeth out of a hippo.

Yeah it is harder but it is still spammy. The harder difficulties in DMC require very precise fighting and dodging. There are some difficulties where if you even get hit once you die.

I like both games but for challenging me, I definitely prefer DMC. Well DMC 3 and 4 anyways.

really? Like I said, I only spent a small amount of time with the demo, so there could be lots that I missed out on. But what I saw just didn't grab me the same way that the opening to HS did.

And hey.. Nariko is a strong, independent woman.. of course she's not going to simply follow orders like a house pet ;)

hehe, my opinion is probably tainted by my button mashing playing style.. perhaps HS is just more forgiving than DMC4 because I was pulling out insane shit with ease with Nariko... at least once you get to use the heavenly sword. With DMC4 all I remember was one combo and a gun.. again, this could be entirely attributed to either it just being a demo or my playing style. ymmv v:)v

I think you have to keep this in mind. If I rememeber correctly I thought this game was the coolest thing ever right when it came out. But looking back there wasn't a lot of variety in enemies or bosses, I think you fight the same bosses like 3 times? But this game created a genre when it came out, I had so much fun trying to get good at all the fast twitch moves, combos, and juggles you could do I couldn't put it down. That said I don't know if it would hold up as well now because I haven't played it lately. I did go back and try and finish up DMC3 before I go and buy 4 but that game is difficult, still can't seem to pass it.

I played 1 and 2 when they first came out and LOVED them.
I tried replaying 2 a while back and couldn't do it. It just wasn't fun anymore since the originality wasn't there after playing so many other newer games.
I got part 3 hoping for better, but it was worse than the first two. :(

It was definitely revolutionary for its time, you can't forget the game is almost 7 years old now, I was only in middle school when it came out.

DMC4 was the first game i purchased for my PS3 when i got it. Having only played PC games to that point, i found the combo combat and extreme fighting sequences a refreshing change of pace. I enjoyed it. I plan on replaying it on the harder difficulty when i get a dual shock 3 later on.

As a DMC fan, I would almost say you cannot even begin to understand the workings of the combat system until you've beaten the game at least once

by game I mean the game you are playing, not any random DMC
