Just started DC, have a few questions???

I just started distributed computing tonight and DL'ed the distributed net client.

The terminology is new to me, so please excuse any mistakes.

I have setup my email address in the client and 1 cruncher has been started. Do I get to join a team once this cruncher has completed?

Also, I have my two computers networked together in a small LAN. If I want to start crunching with the other computer, do I just need to:

(1)Install/configure/setup the client seperately on the 2nd computer.
or
(2)Use my main computer (the one crunching right now) as a server to compile and upload the total results?

If I do (1) above, do I just use the same email address as with the main computer and upload results seperately?

While the two computers are not much (Cel. 566@850, AMD K6-3 450), I still hope to do some good!!

After you've flushed some blocks to dnet, and AFTER the next stats run following that flush, go here:

Dnet

At the top of the page, under "Participant Stats", enter your eMail address in the search box. This will take you to your stats page. Just click the send password link at the bottom.

To flush some blocks, just right click the little cow icon, and click flush.

If both your 'puters have net access, the simplest way would be just to install it a second time.

Welcome aboard!😀

Welcome to the Team BlueWeasel!! Russ pretty much wrapped it up there, but keep posting any questions that come up! : )

Thanks everyone, for the welcoming.

I have read the FAQ on the Team AT webpage, and I am slowly beginning to get a hold of the terminology.

Is a flush simply sending/uploading my work back to the dnet server? Flush out my output buffers, e.g. work completed?

I just tried flushing a few minutes ago, and it said my output buffers are empty. That makes sense - I have not even completed my first cruncher (about 30%). Therefore no work for me to upload.

I see on the rankings and read on the forums about blocks. I also see that the blocks are the units for the scoring and rankings. What is a block, and how does this compare to the "cruncher" I am doing now?

Sorry about the 40 questions. If there is a link to a FAQ or webpage that answers these and many more, please give me a link.

Thanks a bunch. . . .

A single block 1*2^28 = 268,435,456 keys. Blocks range in size from 1*2^28 to 32*2^28. The bigger the block the more keys it contains. If you download bigger blocks your machine will have more work to do. It's also easier on the keyservers as they won't have to send out lots of small blocks. Another term for blocks is WU = Work Unit.

Your Celeron should do about 2,379,150 keys/second, which works out to about 765 blocks/day. Your AMD should do about 760,500 keys/second, or 244 blocks/day. Not to shabby for someone just starting out.

The only other thing I can think of is that you'll want to increase the size of you buff-in file so you don't run out of work to do between connections to the Internet. I'm sure you can find the info on client settings here: Team AnandTech FAQ Also set the client for which contest you want to do. By default it will do OGR, but it can be set to do nothing but RC5-64. The choice is up to you.

If you've got any more questions post them here or send any of us a PM (Private Message). We all started like you, and there is no such thing as a dumb question. Trust me, I've asked my fair share of 'em.

a cruncher refers to how do you put it, a processor. if you have dull processors then 2 crunchers would be active, the little bar that goes across the client window is a progress meter. hope that makes sense

I just flushed a whopping 8 WU's to the Dnet Server. I hope the Server will not crash because of this huge upload. . . . =)

Everyone:I appreciate the assistance. I am sure more questions will surface in the very near future.

Welcome to the TeAm BlueWeasel! 😎

As my distingushed colleagues have already said, ANY QUESTIONS and you just ask! We'll work HARD to solve them for you! 😉

Hope you'll enjoy your stay with us!

How do I increase the amount of WU's that can be retrieved? I assume its under Config -> Buffer Options -> Preferred Packet Size (12)

Right now I only get 24 and it does not take long to crunch those.

I would like to set it so I DL enough work to last pretty much throughout the day and then upload the results at night. This should work well since I am in class from at least 8 to noon everyday.

Any suggestions for a number to use???

BW, I suspect you are doing OGR, were you intending to crack RC5?

I'm set up for RC5, and I have set my preferred packet size at 33 which is the maximum. My fetch work threshold is set at 320 which is enough (for me) for a couple of days. Mine flushes and fetches every hour.

At first I was doing both RC5 and OGR, but I have now disabled all crunching but RC5.

Thanks for the numbers, JimMc. I increased mine and now I am DL'ing more packets each time.

go to 2)Buffer Options --> 13)Fetch Work Threshold
set this to about 4days worth of WU's Which should be about 4000 blocks(assuming comps on 24/7 doing ~1000 block/day).
btw packet size only refers to how big each packet will be. Packets contain blocks and what this lets you do is speciy how many blocks you want per packet. Someone please correct me if Im wrong.
hope this helps.

edit: Doh! I type to slow
imhotepmp
