Filled up my tires with air during lunch yesterday and then swung by the lemon lot here on base for a look. Nothing really crazy except for one car.

2001 BMW M5 for $16,500. I don't know the miles and know nothing about BMWs so just wanted to get a consensus as to whether or not that is anything special (not the M5 part, but the year and price part)?

No, I am not going to buy it, just kinda sorta peaked my interest.

2001 E39 M5 is a gem of a car if in good condition and has been maintained well. Don't know about the price...but it actually sounds pretty good. What is a "lemon lot"?

base? maybe it's someone in the military that bought the thing and never gets a chance to use it so he wants to get rid of it - so it's in pretty good condition. but 'lemon lot' kinda says it's where chumps go to get taken... :hmm::hmm::hmm:

The lemon lot is place where military people trying to sell cars quickly or "For Sale By Owner" can do it without having to put up ads. For instance, soldiers deploying without a long lead time need to get rid of their cars, put it up in the lemon lot. Every base has one and you can usually find some pretty good deals there because some of the vehicles need to be sold right this second and the owners cut the price in order to do it.

I saw the M5 and my mouth started watering...especially when I looked back at my honda civic. 🙁

Good to know. So can anyone buy off the lemon lot...or is the lot restricted to onsite personnel only?

Depends on the base. I work on a military base as a construction contractor. Some bases are more open then others.
