Hi guys,
Just solved my R9 290 coil whine and wanted to share with you as it is a common annoying issue among gpus (especially high-end ones)
I have two reference R9 290s, one Asus and one Sapphire, one would think they are basically the same but the sapphire does not make the slighest whine while the Asus was screamin like a dying pig even at 60 fps cap.
Both plugged on a quite good Corsair 750W gold psu with dedicated/true pci-e connectors.
Was pissing me off so i tried another psu i had around, a mid-range corsair CX 430 so 430W cheap bronze psu with only one true pci-e connector, the second one required a molex to pci-e adapter.
Guess what, the Asus R9 magically stopped screaming even at 450+ fps in 3Dmark. Now it's deadly silent. Errr, i've seen so many people RMA their gpus for similar coil whine issues while most of the time i think it's just a psu compatibility story or even maybe damn pci-e adapters.
Second time i experienced this. First time was with GTX 560 ti. Was less obvious since changing psu at the time did only decrease whining by a fair margin so it was less spectacular.
Still, guys, i would suggest to try another spare psu if u can before u send back ur gpu to RMA for weeks.
Hope it helps ! Have a good day.
