Not sure if I made the right choice, here. I think I may have some seller's remorse. I did get a good amount of money for it, but I think I already miss the car. The reality is that I really didn't drive it much anymore and I had some unexpected expenses crop up (my house needed a new HVAC system, plus some medical stuff). But I can't help but think about how fun that car was, plus how much I learned from it. Damn.

Well, I'm down to just my Mazda 2. I still love that car to death, so I think it'll be okay. 🙂

I think it was a bad decision. But I am a Miata (NA) owner and no other car puts a smile on my face like a Miata. Sorry but you done goofed. Next time, it's clear-blue-and-72 outside...a 'Miata Day' as I call them...you'll be in for it!

I feel your pain.

Ever since I sold my 93, Black and Tan Miata.

No more lowering the top at stoplights.

No more listening to my nephews laugh as they pop the headlights up and down while we drive...

Don't know if its seller's remorse. But somethings changed.

I was seriously looking at you car slugg. Never been in a Miata, but thought since my MG project will go on for eternity, that may be a good car to play around in. How comfortable are the 2nd gen ones? Would they be good for interstate cruising and touring?

NO. And I know that from the perspective of basically owning two Miatas: a first (NA) and second (NB) gen. My girlfriend still has her Miata; it's a 1996.

The NAs and NBs are similar enough, and they're both terrible highway cars. Miatas are fun, but they are NOT built for the highway. Here are the major problems:
  • The car wobbles ar around 65-70 mph. Look up "the Miata shimmy."
  • 70 MPH in 5th gear is about 4K RPM!
  • Gas mileage is GARBAGE at highway speeds.
  • Extremely loud wind noise at highway speeds.
  • Range is not so great, especially at highway speeds.
  • Cruise control is known to be very broken, very often.

If you want a highway cruiser, Miata is *not* the answer. 🙂 Well, at least not the first two generations.

The NC (third gen) Miata is a major improvement for highway driving, and it's definitely more comfortable in general. Really, it's just a better car altogether, but purists will say "it's not a better Miata." I would say you might want to look into an NC Miata with a power retractable hard top. That would be a swell toy for interstate cruising. 🙂

$5500. I still have parts to sell... I'm using some of the money to build a shed, so I'll sell the parts when the shed is up. Moving stuff from the garage = perfect time to get rid of the stuff I don't need!

Most of my seat time has been in the first gen cars and the Miata shimmy was non-existent. From what I recall, the issue was easily corrected on the cars that suffered from it.

Miata's on the highway. On my buddies first gen car with a removable hard top, that thing was loud. It was one of those cars where you really wished for an extra gear....or two. Its like being in an old Integra with the sound deadening pulled. Its the kind of drive where you start thinking about getting noise cancelling headsets. Spend enough time and you realize there is no point even turning on the radio because the tinny crappy stock radio can't drown out the noise.
Its the Miatas way of punishing you for wasting precious treadlife on a highway. Noise issue is solved by taking it to the back roads where the car belongs.
Interesting on the cruise control. Might be another way of the Miata punishing you for taking it on a highway. None of the cars I drove or had loser passenger time in had issues with the cruise. Its been awhile. For all I know they are all busted by now.
