I've been asking myself and others this question a lot of time and would like to know something from you hardcore pc gamers and please, i'd like some serious answers 😛

Lets have in mind these settings before asking the question:
- Playing resolution of 1920x1200
- You obviously want above playable minimum FPS in games (ie 30 and up as a minimum)
- You already have some good hardware around your video card (good CPU, memory, mobo, etc)

Q: Whats your reason for buying a $600-700 video card (or a $800-1000 SLI/CF setup)when you can have well over playable framerates in games with a $250-350 video card OCed or not?

I know some of you just want the latest hardware on the market but it's not the answer i'm looking for heheh...I just want to know what's the point when you can save hundreds of dollars and still be able to fully enjoy a game.

Thanks!

What happens when new games come out and you are below your minumim FPS? If you buy for bare minimum, you will be replacing a lot more often than if you buy big and then wait until you meet the minimum again.

30+FPS is a reasonable min FPS. However, if you are a AMD geek, 1 monitor isn't going to satisfy you, at least 3, else there are no points on spending over 500 bucks on video cards. Some goes up to 6 for flight simulations or alike to "get into the game".

Hardcore goblins don't go for 1920x1200 monitors, they go for 3x1080p, 120hz monitor or 3x 120hz projectors along with their 3d vision glasses. 580 is impressive, but you will still need at least 2 of those babies to maintain 30 FPS min(not to mention each only support up to 2 displays).

I don't know if AMD support projectors or not, otherwise you can have a white wall and have 6 projectors shooting at it to form a seamless display. If you are at those level, the video card is actually the cheap in comparison because you ain't going to play with headsets.

I'd say most people who are willing to spend 1 grand on a video card setup do it precisely because they want the latest hardware on the market.

Crysis: Warhead needs a GTX 480 to get over 30 fps for the minimum framerate 🙂 :

(Though the $240 cards do come close.)

I'm not that picky, I'm still running my 2008 setup of E8400 at 3 GHz stock, though I just upgraded the video card last week from a 4870-512 to a $180 6850.

I might buy a $400+ video card when I build a new system next year, it depends on whether there are any games I care about then that can benefit from it.
