We called a bunch of tech people there, they all told us it would work, but they were all morons who didnt know much.

I doubt it though.. being my phone lines only support up to a 28.8k modem connection.

I guess I just have to wait and find out.

AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! THEY PUSHED IT BACK YET AGAIN FOR 2 WEEKS. Screw it. It's not worth it anymore

Good luck. They told me that I could upgrade from 768 to 1500. 6 weeks and 40 phone calls later they changed their minds.
Never EVER believe anything a tech there tells you. Call at least 4 times with the same question and average out the answers.

Ugh.. penny arcade hit close to home.. that last one where he said he was supposed to get DSL on the 8th..

Especially because they are telling me the 8th as well...

I still doubt I will get it.. don't see how its possible if I cant even get a 33.6 connection on my line

My experience with Verizon has been nothing but good.

When I moved to my house they had my phone line up & running in 20 minutes. 20 minutes as in 20 minutes from the time I called them & asked for service.

We have a 1.5/384 business DSL line, has worked flawlessly since a week before it was supposed to be active.

as long as you're close enough to their centers, i'd imagine they can run new lines from the pole to your house. i love verizon dsl. $35 a month for 1.5mb? not to mention i get about 88KB/s on their news server which has about a week retention. cant beat that with a stick :)

Agreed. I signed up for one of the freedom packages so my DSL is only 29.99/month. And i get ~190KB/sec off their news server :)

See, thats the thing.. my neighborhood is networked really bad and the phone lines are terrible. No one I know can get faster then 28.8k connections in town.. so how if it is so bad with a modem would it be able to support DSL?

As long as you're within spitting distance of the CO you can get DSL. I think it's <12000 feet for 768k and <6000 feet for 1.5mbps but I could be wrong.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong... But your analog speed is mostly irrellevant to what you can achieve with a digital signal.

Your modem connection and your DSL connection have nothing in common. You may be only able to get 28.8 because you are on a SLC(Signal Loop Concentrator) instead of being off a true switch.

SLC... please explain that.. I think my father mentioned that once..

L J, Voice and Data are completely separate systems. For the DSL Data part you simply need to be within 18,000 feet of a DSLAM (The box that puts the High Frequency High Speed Data which is DSL on the line), the Voice Central Office can be many many more miles away.
For example I am at least 75,000 feet away from my nearest Central Office that gives me my Voice line, however the Phone Company Box (DSLAM) that gives me DSL service which is mixed onto my voice line is around the corner only about 1,500 feet away. You will have a DSL Microfilter on your line at your house to separate that mixed Voice and Data on your line.

I helped design the DSL Modem (Alcatel DSL 1000 Modem) that became the Worldwide DSL standard back in 1997 when I was at Hayes Modems.

if your lines can only support 28.8, then you have problems. the highest speed capable of dial up due to fcc rulings is 53.3. the high average is 40-50 kbps. see if you can rewire your house with new phone lines. verizon is probably testing nodes now to see how they can route you, and what lines need to be replaced (for cheapest\effective cost) for you to become a customer. if it's too much work for them to do so, you wont get dsl.

Thought so.

With the 10+ day delay they just told me about I am starting to have faith in my original prediction that I wont get it either.

Verizon is horrible in NJ for setting up service for DSL.
Go with cable.
If not contact Earthlink DSL, 1 year contract good speed, and they'll get verizon to setup lines faster than if you order from them directly

if you need a referal let me know :)

PM me if you do.

Cant get cable at my house.

If I do it's only one way.. with a 28.8 modem upstream connection and a download limit of only 250 megs every hour or so it's a big waste of money.

Don't know if Earthlink is around me either.

Having multiple connections networked to a single 28.8 connection is really a pain.

Edit: Earthlink offeres only Satelite where I live.. and thats $70 a month.

Forget that.

Didn't read my post did you? What your phone line can do with a analog dial up Modem has nothing to do with what a DSL installation will do, NOTHING.

My Voice line can do 24K tops, not even a 28.8K carrier because we are at least 15 miles from the Central Office with all kinds of Voice Coils and Bridge taps in between to get us voice service out here.

I get full 1.5 Meg DSL service because the DSLAM box is around the corner for the DSL signal.
