Just signed up for a service that collects and scans my mail so I can view it online

Three time a week, they pick up my mail and scan it so I can view it online. I can "unsubscribe" from junk mail and never see it again. If I get any packages, they'll drop them off at my front door. Also, I can request any item of mail and they'll drop it off at the end of the week. It looks pretty sweet.

The kicker is... it's only $5 a month.

It seems like they take privacy pretty seriously.
https://www.outboxmail.com/learn/privacy

And its not like your mail is just sitting outside in an unlocked box for anybody to drive up and take....

hmm reading the sight its more of a Data mining for ads and pushing products and selling it to 3rd party's.

wich is what i figured. again you are blowing your privacy for themt o make a money off you.

also don't think this part is a great idea.

Outbox may also disclose your personally identifiable information if required to do so by law or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with state and federal laws (such as U.S. Copyright law) or respond to a court order, judicial or other government subpoena, or warrant. In some cases, Outbox may make such disclosures without first providing notice to you.

meh. just to many issues to trust the company with such information

This is a great idea, surprised it took this long. Any mail I get is only due to an organization's bureaucracy, or junk mail. I rarely if ever get anything I need the physical copy of.

so why pay someone to spam your inbox, versus going outside and simply tossing it in the garbage can on the way back?

One issue I have is that I move around every year or so. So a lot of mail I send to a parent's house. This also solves the problem of a permanent address.

Not saying I would actually pay $5/mo, probably wouldn't given my volume of mail, but I can see a demand for it.

I like the idea, although I would take the business model a step further and just give people an address they can have mail sent to. That way people are paying to ship you paper you can recycle, and other people are paying you to read what was on the paper you recycled. I like it.

Services like that already exist. I like the idea that I can still go out to my mailbox like normal if I choose.

No way in hell would I sign up for a service like that. The extremely minor convenience is offset by huge security and privacy issues

Ah I see, but that's pretty damn labor intensive from their end, and costly in terms of vehicle operating expenses.

From what I understand, their original desires were to partner with USPS and intercept mail before it got delivered. Maybe that is an option for the future if they get big enough. I could see a service like this integrating heavily in USPS.

I do like that this service will drop packages and such off at my door step. I doubt the other services do that. I also doubt the other services have a simple way to get individual pieces of mail physically delivered if you want.

wow how lazy does one have to be to PAY a company to pick up their mail at their house from a mailbox that is 25 feet from his front door... then to take the mail to their facility to open it, scan it file it and store it for 30 days and email it to the OP so he can read it on his ipad.... and if he wants a interesting piece of that mail in his grubby hands he calls them up to redeliver back to his house...

am i missing something or does this should like a really stupid thing to be proud of doing?

It basically lets me forget about my mailbox. The letters will be viewable online. I'll be able to block the junk mail. My packages will be left on my doorstep.

My neighborhood block has a shared mailbox area. Every day, I walk a block to the mailbox, pull out of a bunch of junk mail, walk back home, and throw it in my recycling bin. It's just something I shouldn't have to bother with for those 3 bills and 1 package I get a month. Why should I have such a pointless ritual in this day and age?

It also retains a digital record of the mail I care about. I can organize it in folders in the same way I would organize email.

Talking about the cost: Say it takes me 3 minutes to check my mailbox every day. That adds up to 72 minutes a month. Paying $5 a month to save 72 minutes is totally worthwhile. I value my time much more than that.

what ever floats your boat. it just seems like a waste of time and just added complexity to a already simple as dirt task.

I can't see myself signing up for a service like that. Just not worth it to me.
