ok..

My problems 2:

My current system is a 1.33ghz, @ 1.4, asus a7v133, 256mg ram, gf2-mx, and runs perfectly stable whenever im on it, never crashes (last crash i can remember was when i tried to make a picture i think 30000X30000 in adobe photoshop). When i leave my system for more than 2 hours my seti client stops working, but keeps counting time. SO if i go away for 10 hours, it will say its been working for 10 hours, but will only have like 30% of the workunit done.
How do i fix this? Any ideas?

Second.

How do people get there work unit time down to 6 hours average... I would think with my current system, i would be able to get one of the best averages...Am i wrong?

How do i lower my time?
Thanks !!

Sounds like your screen saver is kicking in.

When the screen saver is going it really kills your time.
Well this would be true if you are running the GUI one
instead of the CLI.

This is what I have noticed on my machines and had to switch
to the CLI to get good times. ;)

...or the comp just goes to sleep.

I have one comp at the office that will suspend after a given time of inactivity. I can't event ping it or access shares, and have to strike a key to wake it.
There is NO power saving turned on either in win setup or bios, and the comp used to act normally (blank screen and crunch like mad) a week or two ago. I guess I'll just reinstall the bitch.

Hi Dingas and welcome to the TeAm!!

What Eponymous said is correct and does also apply to the cli verion of SETI also. The GUI version has its own cpu eating screen saver, but their are plenty of other screen savers that display pretty praphics that can kill you SETI output time. I have mine set to "Blank". That screen saver option doesn't load by default but is on the Win9x/Me disk.

LeBlatt's comment could also be your problem. Make sure you have turned off/disabled Power Management in he bios and within your OS. If you have MS Office installed, you will want to remove any TSRs that is has running like Faststart. Also check to see if you have one of those CPU cooling programs running in the background.

Yes, you should have very good SETI times on your box, easily under 6 hours. I have a 1GHz/200 Athlon that runs a WU in 6:45, with cheap CAS3 RAM. My 1GHz/133 PIII with CAS2 Micron RAM runs it in 6:15. You should beat both of those.

Well, good luck and keep us posted.

I have almost the same setup, running only 1200@1350, and I am getting times around 5 Hours 13 min.

You should get down there to..

I am running Win2K Server, and running Seti as a service..

Look at Seti as Service and check my page about runnning seti as a service..

Hope to see you improve on your times...

Ohh, Welcome to the TeAm...

OK guys, he's using the GUI (screen saver).

Dingas - You need to change your client/settings to get lower times. You need to get the CLI (Command Line Interface) version from HERE. It's called i386-winnt-cmdline.exe, it works in ALL versions of windows. Then, to cache work units and monitor your progress, use SETI Driver. and SETI Watch to monitor/track progress.

Install the above programs and set your screen saver to Blank Screen. Set the time interval for it to kick onto blank as short as possible. Graphics display SLOWS down your times significantly.

Let us know if we can help you.

Thanks for Joining TA! :)

I think i got it working, and i dont understand the need for the setidriver, setiwatch seems it works just fine.

Is there any way to minimize the command line to the system tray?

Setidriver will let you minimize the client to the system tray, but most peeps use it to cache work units in case of a server outage/upgrade. Lets your client keep working.

Welcome to the team.

Welcome to the team :D

Storing WU's is a good idea if you wanta be crunching all the time:)
(mainly to ride out any server outages)
btw SETIDriver also gives you a progress bar for the WU being processed.

HIYA ElFenix!

ahh yes, I now see the use of setidriver, nice little program...

I completed so far 1 WU today, and it took 5:35, which is my quickest one yet, but i was on my machine all day doing stuff, so that will be lowered even further..

Thanks everyone!
