People here are actually defending Obama's statement that it is impossible to build a business without a government building roads and bridges? What did all those poor businessmen do before the roads and bridges were built? Businesses obviously did not exist back then...

Morons.

That's not what he said liar.

That's not exactly what he said, but that was generally the sentiment. And, No, they're not really defending O'Bummers statement so much as spinning it. Slightly different.

They rode horses. Do you? Maybe you can borrow Ann Romney's.

So that means you agree Obama was not being truthful. A good start.

And no, her horse is a loser - as shown by their tax returns. ;)

It was a different time and is irrelevant to this conversation.

For the horse part lol true.

The only people spinning it are the people who either didn't understand it because they are dumb, or didn't want to understand it because Obama said it.

Great Tech cite here. But this forum is fuckin comedy gold...

I run my own business. I do nicely. My work is in demand.

I have succeeded on my own initiative. I've worked to develop relationships. I've practiced what I do to get good at it. I've taken every opportunity to stretch myself in a new direction, within reason.

That being said, of course I've benefitted from "somebody else"- which really means "everybody else." I've benefitted from the work of the government, the work of other businesspeople, the work of scholars, the work of taxpayers--to the extent you can separate all of them.

--Without the internet, my business would collapse. Immediately. Thank you, those prople who invented the internet. Thank you, those colleges and universities, many of them public, that provided funding and space for the work that needed to happen to make the internet a reality. Thank you, governments and taxpayers which have made it a priority to keep the internet up and running. Without you, I wouldn't be here.

--Without a consistent power supply, I wouldnt be in business. At all. Thank you to the power companies who build and maintain power stations, to the government officials who funded large projects designed to expand the power grid, to the peaceful interactions in the USA that allow my state to get power from other states as needed and vice versa, to the scientists who developed ways of generating power other than whale oil and candle wax, to the linemen and women who clear the tree branches off the lines after storms. Without you, I wouldn't be here.

--Without roads, I wouldn't be in business. This would take a little while to squeeze me out, since I'm so dependent on the internet these days, but when I order supplies that come via UPS or FedEx, guess what, they use the highways and the streets of my city. Not to mention that eventually I'd get hungry, and the supermarkets wouldn't have much food for sale without trucking, and I'd have difficulty getting it all home if I had to lug it through the brambles. Thank you to the departments of transportation who plow the snow, repair the roads, fix the bridges, and built the highways to begin with. Thank you to the people decades back who decided that a good road system would be good for business. Thank you to the taxpayers who fund this not inconsiderable expense. I doubt very many small business owners could afford their own road system. Without you, I wouldn't be here.

--Without an education, I'd be nowhere. I did a lot to educate myself. I worked hard in school, got into a "good" college; I had parents who valued education. But I also learned a lot from fellow students, and I learned a great deal from many (though by no means all) teachers. Not only that, my business relies on having customers who are educated themselves. Without an education, they wouldn't be able to hire me/sell me goods/support me in the myriad of details that go along with running a business. Thank you to the teachers who taught me and everybody else, to the municipalities and other governments that decided education was worth supporting, thank you to the people who produced books, videos, offered me and everyone else educational experiences. Without you, I wouldn't be here.

--Without a dedicated military, a strong police force, a corps of firefighters, things would be very different. I can devote my time to work rather than to policing my property or worrying about foreign invaders. I can rest easy knowing that I live in a country that's taken on these roles for me, allowing me to concentrate on my business. It's hard for me to see how anybody lives in a country that doesn't provide these services, let alone runs a business. Thank you to the fighting men and women and the government agencies that train them and pay them. Thank you to the taxpayers who support police forces and fire departments. Thank you to the people who way back when decided that these were legitimate functions of government. Without you, I wouldn't be here.

So, in answer to the question, yes. I MADE IT HAPPEN, but Somebody else made it happen. A whole lot of somebody elses made it happen too. But it would be silly to think I could have done it "all on my own." And if you doubt it, ask yourself: How easy would it be for me to start my business all over again in Somalia?

I don't know how he would expect that since the news crew was not there when he turned Biden's crew down. They went there after Biden's advance team told them that they had been turned down there first.

And if that hadn't happened, word would have gotten out some other way. Nothing stays secret for long these days, especially in WDC in an election year.

LOL, you are making a convoluted statement rather than asking a question. My suggestion is that, in any case, you should seek the professional advice of a tax attorney and tax accountant. Straight away.
You are quite correct that I screwed that up and failed to pose it as a question. Mea culpa, I was in a hurry. The point is I firmly believe you pulled that little anecdote straight out of your rectum, or at a minimum are misrepresenting the situation. Yes, businesses pay taxes. No, employee wages are not double taxed.

Quick question for you, though... did these entrepreneurs build their businesses or did Obama?

:awe:
I think President Obama can speak for himself:
"The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."
I do understand that doesn't fit your RNC propaganda points, but you'll just have to cope. You'd rather keep lying for your team, both directly and through innuendo (Obama didn't say a single word about him personally building anyone's businesses).

You still haven't clicked through to the video news report, have you? :awe:
I did once you posted a non-Breitbart link.

You take the reporter's acknowledged hearsay comment about the protective detail and morph it into a seeming confirmed quotation.

Breitbart would be proud of such skilled prevarication. No wonder you admire them so. Angling for a job there?

Out of curiosity, do you have a link to that? Not doubting he said it, just curious where you got it from.

"There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

"The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

"So we say to ourselves, ever since the founding of this country, you know what, there are some things we do better together. That’s how we funded the G.I. Bill. That’s how we created the middle class. That’s how we built the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam. That’s how we invented the Internet. That’s how we sent a man to the moon. We rise or fall together as one nation and as one people, and that’s the reason I’m running for President -- because I still believe in that idea. You’re not on your own, we’re in this together."

You could just admit that you didn't understand it and had to have it explained to you, that would be a lot easier for you.

That would be lying again. We all know that the republicans here understand what he meant, or they have only read or seen the "clips" that are out of context. They just twist it to try to make his comment sound worse than it is. And for some naive people, it works, like a cupcake shop owner.

Don't be fooled in thinking the republicans are that stupid, they just twist words to fit their agenda to try to get Obama out.

I copied it from the thread about Obama's "you didn't build that" speech. The original source is that same speech, two or three sentences after the "build that" line. It was Obama summing up what he'd just said, the context for that line.

It is a 42 minute video - I know I cannot stomache listening to Obama read for 42 minutes...heck, most people are not good enough to listen to them read for that long. Any idea where in the video it is said?

Not understand what? Bummers speech? I, like tens of millions of other Americans, understood what he said just fine. It's right there in post 66 of this thread. Just go to the section that was bolded, and go up a few lines. Obama agrees with me, not you, given he's the one that said it quite clearly.

Understand the necessary spin? That too I understand perfectly. Now that what he said has been stated so clearly, in an election year where time won't allow it to be forgotten in time, you guys have zero direction to go other than play damage control. It's understandable, the Rep's are doing the same thing on Romney's tax returns. In things of this magnitude of speech f@ckup, it's understood you'll be playing the spin game. You guys really aren't doing a great job (except in your minds), but you certainly deserve an A for effort and dedication...

After seeing cyber's reaction I am beginning to wonder if all these people have just not heard the rest of the speech at all. I mean, wtf, how do you go on ranting about you didn't build that but don't even bother to verify the context of the speech? It's not like he stood up, said you didn't build that, then sat back down.

People need to wake up. I mean that is just sad.

but you certainly deserve an A for effort and dedication...

Radical fundamentalists usually do. The sad thing is most of them don't verify facts and understand context, thus you get this idiocy.

I think the thing that's most insulting is not even Obama's 'you didn't build that' sentiment, it's what came before and after it. He's slyly (well, trying to be anyways...and on the average American it I'm sure works great) making the case for basically more socialist type policy (before the ridiculous comments start, I believe every Western country needs at least some level of Socialist policy, so save it). He's making an appeal to emotion pleaing with the voting US public that because others performed jobs so they could have money for life, and the output of these jobs happened to benefit more than just the employer, We too need to give/cede more to Uncle Sugar. Uhhhh....What? The 'you didn't build that' was just icing on the shit sandwh...er, cake.

It is 42 minutes of bad public speaking. Why would I want to listen to the entire thing? That is why we have news outlets who have no choice but to stomache it.

If you did listen to the entire thing, you first have my condolences and then I will ask you to post the time stamp of Obama saying it. I want to hear it for myself. Due to being so close to the election, we can no longer just blindly trust new sources. ALL sides are playing things up.

The fact that you consider Obama a bad public speaker makes me really question your motives. Compared to Bush, Obama is the master orator. It doesn't take much to find the truth of this situation. Type youtube and then search there for the videos you need. Here, I will take the 30 seconds you can't seem to find to give you an example:
