If you haven't heard already whistler will only be allowed to be run on one machine. They have it so you have to register your computer within 30 days of installing or it quits working.

I think microsoft could be reasonably and let people install on two or three machines with one purchase of the software. The one copy per machine is just to strict. My brother says he has bought his last copy of windows, after all he has 4 machines and there is no way he is going to fork out money for 4 copies or license them.

This reminds me alot of the DVD and Divx war, divx lost thankfully. I hope Linux can cookup a easy to use operating system that will compete better with windows in the near future.

I hope microsoft gets broken up there to powerful!

That sucks. I have a legal copy of WinME I won't even register that. I don't register any programs. I guess Microsoft is not going to get any more of my money.

yakko, my post did not include everyone, but you should see some of the squealing that I have seen from the kiddies who won't be able use the warez versions.

have no fear. :) paruhd0x is right... "they" have never let me down, and "they" will have that fixed well before it hits the shelves. you can never stop software piracy.

I wish I was as rich as compuwiz1 so I could afford whatever software I wanted

Finally,..
The demise of the MS enpire has now begun. It was never the competitors or a court order, but the greed they've built over the years that will end their time of prosperity.

Students who cannot afford the high prices generally get big discounts at their schools or other channels.

Also when you pay for a copy of Windows, you are paying for a license for 1 computer. If you are using it for more than one, you are really stealing. It might sound strict, but everyone is just too lax when it comes down to it. I don't see why you should boycott Whistler, they are just enforcing their copyrights and protection a bit more tighter. It should have been this way from the beginning. Maybe then software wouldn't cost so much.

Ahhh I am aging too much, I would have never said this a year ago.

I don't care that they try to enforce their copyrights, it's a free world, they can enforce whatever they want, and if you don't like it, go to linux or something else.

The one part that bothers me is that they are forcing people to give them information (register) to use the product. I for one refuse to use any product that makes me jump through hoops every time I have to reinstall (contact MS by phone whenever I revamp my PC -- are they nuts??). Copy protection is fine, but punishing legal users is extremely stupid. I too will boycott Whistler.

The only people that are inconvenienced by this crap are the legal users. The warezers will get the corporate version that doesn't need 'registration' and continue on their way. Stick a fork in'em folks, MS is done.....

Actually its considered fair use for someone to use the same software program on both their Desktop & laptop computer.

Just as its fair use to be able to make a cassette of any record you buy, for playing in the car.

This policy of MS's is going to do nothing but hurt them in the end.

Look at all the firms that are selling computers (or are planning too) with a free install of BeOS5 (it is possible to put the free version of BeOS5 on its own bootable EB partition with a boot menu) or Linux on their own partitions, then partitioning a FAT32 file on the HDD, so owners have the option of installing what they want on that partition themselves. & All because MS is charging too much for their licenses. Even Sony is going to start doing this in about 2 months with some of the systems they are going to sell (click here, to see Sony's new IMac clone with a cheap BeInc OS).

If Microsoft really wanted their products to sell, they should lower their prices. This is just another worthless action from microsoft to make you pay....:(

I couldn't agree with it more. I more than likely would not have purchased a copy of this operating system, but if I was going to, I wouldn't be now. It is rediculous. Surely they could implement a better system of copyright protection schemes than this.

I can't afford a Boxster S...that doesn't mean I go out and steal one.

If you can't afford to buy programs, don't use them. Not everyone has to keep the newest greatest software around.

I wont be buying whistler, I´ll probably get a illegal version of it and try it out but I wont use it much unless they remove that bloody registration crap.

Also when software companies are thinking about prices they do it all wrong. I´m willing to bay the price you have to pay to get Win98 or WinME, but that is if I get a good product, I´m not ready to pay that much for crap like win98. If win2000 would cost the same as Win98 then I would have bought it right away. A $200 OS is just to much for the average user

So, Czar, you are saying that you don't use a MS OS because it is crap, right? That's your excuse for not buying it. Ok, I'll buy that.

It's crap, but I'll bet that's what you are using to surf with, some version of Windoze.

What a hypocrite. If it was really crap, you wouldn't use it at all. You'd learn Linux.

All you need is the handy dandy key generator, which will be on all "virtual" crackstore shelves months before Whistler is released to the public. The only people MS will irritate with this so-called "anti-piracy scheme" are themselves (by spending the money to operate it) and the general customers who don't even know what a key generator is.

Yes, there is no blaming MS in doing this, we know they want every last bit of money they deserve, but this is not going to stop piracy in any way, unless they can shut down all IRC servers and the entire internet.

What happens when you need to format and reinstall, or worse, upgrade your PC?

I personaly own (read:legally) several of MS's products. For example, Back Office 4.5, Back Offive Small Business, Win2K Pro and server, Office... The list goes on and on. But I hate this new idea that MS has come up with. It is not something I want to HAVE to do after I BOUGHT the software.

What about corporate customers? You know, with 50-100 installs to do quickly, they have to stop to get a second keycode for each one? This will not work!

I installed whistler beta 1 last night to see if I liked it at all. One of the initial installation screens said "Thank you for purchasing a PC with windows whistler" or something to that effect. The first time it booted, there was a tutorial that came up automatically on how to use the mouse!!

I have heard rumors that whistler will only be released with new PC's and this beta seemed to follow those lines. Has anyone else heard this?

well, i was hoping that whitsler would be the last os i'd buy, and it might be, I don't mind registering software, once, but if i reg a program I've bought then have to reinstall it and re register it, it becomes anoying, and something like an Operating system, I really don't want the hassle of having to re register. .. . .I like the benifits of registering games and hardware, but having to redo it each time i reinstall the device is not funny. And the msg's to register on programs that won't register thru the web, (If it won't auto reg, i don't bother wasting the postage)

What about people who have comps and no inet or phone lines whatsoever? iknow its a outskirt, but arent they excluding them?? what, mail reggy your product, while you wait for ms to get off their big ass and send you a code. the "other" source sounds better.
