Not your typical Adam Sandler movie, as evidenced by the guys in front of me who characterized it as "gay" when it was over. If you like serious and original movies though, this is definitely one to watch. It has that kind of odd and dreamy feel that I haven't seen since Being John Malkovich. P.T. Anderson is a genius at moving the camera around, if you've watched Boogie Nights and Magnolia you'll know what I'm talking about. Also I think this movie has some of the best lighting I've ever seen. The scoring is non-traditional but effective, it sounds like something Phillip Glass would compose.

As for the film itself, it's neurotic but in a good way. The plot takes a few sharp turns but ultimately resolves itself. There were a few laughs, but Adam Sandler pushed some serious dramatic acting chops. The rest of the cast is excellent (Emily Watson is a babe! :p). Overall it's one of the best movies I've seen this year.

Yeah, I've heard nothing but good reviews for this movie. I think that I'll take the chick that I'm after to see it this coming Friday.

This movie blew ass, the woman drug me along. The whole theater was couples, i should have seen the warning signs. People in the theater were dissapointed as well, the ass kicking scene was about the only dim highlight. I should have seen jackass again for the second night in a row...

Yeah, if Jackass is the pinnacle of cinema for you, you probably won't like "Punch Drunk Love".

As for me, I can't wait to see it. I've been waiting for P.T. Anderson's next masterpiece.

I have seen nothing but good reviews for this movie... can't wait to see it...

Should be an easy choice between this and Jackass (can it even be considered a movie???)...

I didn't mean to imply that jackass was my idea of a movie. I would rather watch that crap again than see this the first time. On the other hand i think the RING (only other movies i've seen in the past two months) kicked ass as far as being a good flick to watch.

I didn't think punch was "gay" i just didn't like it.

normally i like odd movies (like being john malkovich and memento) but this movie just confused the hell out of me... it was just so random and disconnected... the entire time i was expecting something to pull everything together, then it just ended...

Phocas,

I'd be interested in your opinion of Donnie Darko, Igby Goes Down, and One Hour Photo? Did you see Flawless? Trulely a "gay" film, but worthy of much props!!!!

I've never seen a complete Adam Sandler film in my life, yet I went to see this opening night (that's more of a statement that I respect P.T. Anderson than anything else) and enjoyed it. To be fair, I like Sandler's comedy, but in very small doses. I think his Opera Man and Cajun Man segments on Saturday Night Live were hilarious, but couldn't fathom watching him do funny voices and dishing out mean-spirited slapstick for an hour and a half. Punch Drunk Love really sidesteps that by giving him a focus for that aggression, and actually reminds me As Good As It Gets, but with more sweetness and edginess than simple drama.

Visually, the film looks great. I love the way the backgrounds are washed out and plain so that the colors of the main characters (particularly Sandler's blue suit) jump out at the audience.

I do submit that the pacing of the film is painfully slow at times. I'm amazed that it clocks in at under an hour and thirty minutes.

I think that the reason people wouldn't like this film is b/c they ARE expecting just another Sandler comedy with sick humour and his whacky voices and singing.

But this movie (from what I hear) shows that Sandler can be a REAL actor and that's what interests me. And yes, I have seen One Hour Photo...f*&ked up movie, but VERY good. Definitely DVD material.

Hey, you can always watch "Spirited Away" if you don't want to watch Jackass or the Punch movie :)

It's a shame Adam Sandler is one of two things I can't do in life. I am actually interested in this movie.

I have never seen an Adam Sandler movie and I have never tried weed.

Oh well.

Oh well.

I read an interview with P.T. Anderson (writer/director) of Punch-Drunk, and he said he would watch Sandler's movies as a break from editing his last movie Magnolia. He mentioned Sandler's movies influenced him to pare down Punch-Drunk to 90 minutes (Magnolia was over 3 hours long), and he enjoyed them b/c they were the type you could smoke weed with and watch on a Saturday night.

How much did this movie bring in on its opening weekend?
From a movie site: $1,630,00.00 on 78 screens for a $20,897 per screen average, which ranked #15 for the weekend. I think it only opened in NY and L.A. first weekend. None of P.T. Anderson's movies have done well at the box office (even Boogie Nights) since they tend to be a little out of mainstream audiences. He does well with critics though (he won Best Director at Cannes for Punch-Drunk)

I saw it with my wife Saturday night. I loved it, it was so weird....dreamy. The wife didn't understand it. I told her that she has to just let it happen, don't even try and think, just let it play and go with the flow. I really enjoyed it, the best I have ever seen Adam. The sisters were great too. I will be getting this when it hits dvd. ;)
