Just saw LOTR for the first time . . .

Am I the only one who thought Lord of the Rings was incredibly ponderous and dull? Criminy! I know people who have seen it two and three times, but I started looking at my watch within the first hour, and it seemed to go on forever. Does nobody care about character development or genuine emotional interaction anymore? I will be keen to see how it fares at the Academy Awards tonight, because as far as I can see it should not be competitive in any area other than visual effects (and even those really did not blow me away). I don't mean to be a troll (no pun intended!), but I was very disappointed by this film.

I didn't much care for it either. Spent a lot of time looking at the time on my cell phone & playing games on it.

If I hadn't read the books, I would totally agree. Because of that, it was kinda neat seeing it come to life, even if it didn't follow the books very well.

I read the books many times as a child, but have not in some time, so for the most part I was rehearing the story as though it were for the first time. In all fairness I generally dislike the science fiction and fantasy genres, but obviously LOTR has achieved such a broad, loyal following that it has pretty well transcended its own genre.

I can certainly understand how many people would feel this way (the same way I can understand why some folks didn't like Moulin Rouge). Myself, I enjoyed the film very much. I felt did a good job on the epic nature of the piece and didn't feel short changed in regards to character development. Was disappointed with Liv Tyler's character, but the other places where things strayed from the books didn't get my panties in a bunch.
