Not that Spoilers would really matter. Jaime scored some press tickets to see the preview showing of Bruce Almighty last night. So her and I went.
Quick Synopsis of the movie:
Bruce is a lovable news reporter that cannot make anchorman because noone takes him seriously. After a severe setback in his life, he blames God for ignoring him. God shows up, gives Bruce his powers, bring on the funny.
Anyway, this movie was decent, but I really wouldn't spend any more money than matenee pricing on it. It's basically Liar Liar meets the Mask. The power scenes were funny, but only in a slight chuckle kinda way. Often when Jim Carey is alone on screen, the comedy seems almost forced and empty. Sure, I love low brow humor, but some of this stuff was just plain overdone and stupid, even for a Jim Carey movie.
It's when he is onscreen with supporting cast that really becomes funny. His scenes with God, Morgan Freeman, were fairly good. Although I found myself laughing at Morgan more than Jim. His scene with Steve Carrell(the "mean reporter") brought me to tears. But of course, 90% of it was Steve and his perfect deadpan delivery that makes him so strong on the Daily Show.
Overall I give this movie a "Meh". Funny, predictable, decent to see if you are bored and someone else is taking you. If you want a good romantic comedy that has a good ending too, I suggest Anger Management.
On a Side note, the only(very odd for Loews Theater) preview was for Hulk. General consensus of the crowd around me is that it's going to flop. The CGI is WAY overdone. It almost looks like they altered Shrek a bit and reused his body model for the shots. It was that goofy and unreal. I know, I know, hulk is supposed to be huge. He is supposed to be able to do all those things (jumping huge distances, throw tanks, generally be angry), but they went overboard. You want to see the way CGI is supposed to be used, look at Spiderman or even the LOTR. At least with those movies, you are willing to suspend disbelief a bit to accept the effects. No, I didn't expect to see a dude covered in green paint and running in slow-mo, but this stuff is almost crap. I probably will see it, but hopefully Jaime can get some free tickets to it too.
