So, I just saw babel. Most depressing movie ever! It was 2.5 hrs of bad things happening to people. It was filmed really well, in fact it was so emotionally charged I was feeling physically ill and drained by the end. But I can't figure it out. Did anyone else feel this way or was it a case of food poisoning.

****SPOILERS*******************************************
00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
Ok so japanese guy goes hunting at some point in the past, he gives his gun to his guide, who gives the gun to a friend, the friends kid, shoots Pitt's wife. While this is happening Pitt's nanny goes to her sons wedding in mexico and brings Pitt's kids. When crossing the border nanny's nephew goes a little bit nuts and leaves them in the desert. INS finds kids and deports nanny. Japanese guys daugter deaf-mute can't cope her mother killing herself and gets naked for some reason. But WTF does it all mean? What do I take away from this? People suffer the same in every language?

I'm officially on the Babel bandwagon and you're all welcome aboard on Oscar night! Just got done watching it and was very impressed, especially when put up against this years "crop" of titles.

I think the OP put it best by saying it shows you that people all over the world suffer, it may or may not be trying to say that guns are a big part of it too, the whole movie is up for debate really.

What is up with all the "its supposed to make you think" movies? God, I watch the movies so I can relax and escape the everyday grind. I do not want to go to movies that are political/emotional generators for the sheeple out there watching it. If I want to think about politics and argue about it I'll get involved in politics (which I have).

The movie I hated the most for doing this was Lords of War. I was soooooooooooooo ticked off when the movie was over. Of course in case you didnt get the point of the message they gave a disclamer bashing every "superpower" in the world, but France was ok :D

EDIT: If you want to make a politically charged movie thats fine by me, but its the ones that hide the fact until you have already paid your money that I hate.

I agree with you, I watch movies for entertainment, not to get depressed about what's happening in the world. That's what news is for.

I watched Running with Scissors, that was kind of the same as this movie sounds. Nothing but bad things happening the entire time but at the end I felt impressed and it did change the way I looked at some things and I'm glad I saw it.

I just saw this movie this weekend and I cant believe it won best picture. It seemed so unoriginal to me. How many movies these days do the intertwining of threads until you see how they are all related? How many movies present a really bleak world-view with the hope that it'll be considered artsy?

I say F this movie. If I had rented it I'm not sure I'd have watched it to the end.

I saw this movie a few weeks ago while overseas. I had no expectations of it and saw it in a hot theater that had a bad copy of the film and a crappy sound system. Both me and my wife thought it was great.

Then again, I don't walk away from movies questioning what I'm suppose to take away.

I just saw this movie as well.

I say:

1. It is NOT worth seeing - quite boring and pointless
2. The cameramen should be shot in the face - Is it cool and "artsy" to just have a really shakey camera. I thought I was watching Blair Witch Project
3. Why does the Japanese girl get nude and show her bush all the time?
4. There were 0 ninjas in the movie

All in all, this is a complete waste of time and money and it is a great movie for me to poop on.

I guess you were one of the people that made Stomp The Yard this week's #1 box office movie.. because you've completely misinterpreted Babel and should probably stick to less thought-provoking features.

If you want something thought provoking, go to your local homeless shelter. Heck, sometimes you even get to talk to people who don't speak English there. Or how about volunteering at your local halfway house for abused women.. all very emotional and thought provoking..

I go to movies to escape reality... not to see some form of reality that is conjured up by some espresso drinking director who thinks he knows what reality is when he drives a 100 thousand dollar car and lives in a mutli-million dollar home(s)...

Thanks folks for the 411 on the movie.. I will not see babel...

Your first paragraph makes no sense at all, we're talking about types of movies and movie genre here, not volunteer work.

If I want something thought provoking I'll watch a film like The Matrix, Memento, or 12 Monkeys.. all of which are excellent movies that I'm sure you'll never like because they make you analyze and question the plot and don't wrap up the ending in a nice little package with a bow. That's fine though, I like plenty of those cookie-cutter movies with blood, CGI, and happy endings like you do.. but there's nothing wrong with an open-ended realistic-fiction piece that makes you think, it's just a shame you won't consider deviating from that mindless entertainment once in a while with a movie like this that will probably be considered for a handful of Oscar's.

It's your call though, you want to listen to a populace of techno-geeks rather then reading the reviews and seeing the rewards it has already won, that's fine with me. In fact I just picked up Taxi with Queen Latifah and Jimmy Fallon on DVD if you want to come over and get high while watching it.

The oscars were created by and awarded to by the same populace as the Cappuccino drinking, mercedes driving people that created these film in the first place. An oscar does not guarantee a "realistic fiction piece". Most of the times these films are masturbation pieces by the director trying to see how obscure, open ended he make a film. If he can make the film rifle of morality ambiguity, all the better..

That being said, when in the rare instances, a film maker does try to make a film accurately display reality, he cannot because of his cappuccio colored eyes.. his lifestyle gets in the way. Can a film maker accurately describe the realities of life when every night after shooting he goes home to his multimillion dollar home in the hills.. to his 6'1' model, trophy wife in his 100 thousand car on the way picking up sushi for dinner? I say not.

For reality, I live in the real world. For entertainment I go see movies... entertain me.. I don't want to see a directors jadded version of reality..

I think it's funny that when someone doesn't like a "artsy" or "thought provoking" movie, someone else comes along and basically says they are a brain dead teenager who only likes chickflicks and Jackass. I really do like a lot of different movies. I like entertaining ones and thought provoking ones. Unfortunately, Babel was neither for me, and a complete waste of time and money in my case.

All I'm saying is just because you don't 'get' a movie doesn't make it "a complete waste of time and money". Maybe it was to you because you paid money to see it and ultimately wasted time watching it because you didn't understand certain things at the end, but how does that make the movie bad? And WTF does ninja's have to do with it, I assume you're just being sarcastic but maybe I'm missing something there.

I'm with you on the camera thing though, I hate how some movies are filmed like that with random close-up's and jerky movements.. but that doesn't make the movie bad, it's just a gripe. And the Japanese girl is a bit perplexing, but you have to understand their culture and how hard it is being a deaf-mute in it, being looked upon as a monster by so many. My theory is she wanted to feel normal by being so promiscuous, but of course that's open to interpretation and on IMDB there's already a huge debate about incest maybe being part of it all.

Trust me, I'm not a big fan of the artsy/independent type films that don't get much press like this, and I've seen a lot of movie I just didn't understand when the final credits rolled, but I'll never hold it against a director for filming a movie the way he wants. I can see past whatever cappuccino goggles you guys think these directors wear and I can appreciate him wanting his audience to think a little.

very hard if u are a male to volunteer at a abused woman's shelter. they have to be careful not to hire the lunatics that want to track down their women. lots of screening and background checks...
