I would already have a 1920x1200 LCD if it weren't for the GPU power required to run every game at high settings @ that resolution.
Instead, i bought myself a second 20" LCD, since i have major issues with the craptastic implementation of CF/SLI & the resulting costs.
The GPU requirements are over stated. I haven't tried many games yet, but my 7600GT runs both Half Life 2 and Day of Defeat Source on max details at 1902x1200 without a hitch. Anyone who is considering getting a 24" monitor but is concerned about owning a mid range card like mine, worry no more. I'm going to have a go at FEAR soon and I'll let you all know how it goes.
24" 2407 here. 1920x1200 does need some serious graphical horsepower. Most stuff was playable on my X1900XT @ 1920x1200 with settings mostly maxed. I had to take FEAR down to a lower res though. Now I have a 7950GX2 and I haven't yet found a game that wasn't playable @ 1920x1200.
We are happy you are happy. But our point was that the vast majority of the consumer market I bet is holding off from 24" LCDs because they are afraid they'll need to upgrade to a $500 vid card every 6 months to keep up. Sorry but I'd rather pay car insurance or something...if only LCDs scaled perfectly like CRTs...

exactly, I have a 7900GT and run at 1920x1080P and it chokes in Oblivion and FEAR. However HL2 and CSS run fine as they came out awhile ago and have great coding.
OK the only game i play with AOE3 for the time being and the Dell 24" and my 7800GT is great if i don't turn on AA but max everything else on @ 1920x1200.
On another note, if you want to run your games at 1600x1200 and don't mind the black bars i just measure the screen size and it would be like a 21" LCD, 1680x1050 would be a 21" also, 1280x1024 would be a 17". This is a 1:1 ratio with the screen so there is no scaling involved. So if you really want a 24" monitor and you current system runs 1600x1200 fine in games then you can always run the screen back to 1600x1200. But this will only be fine if you want to upgrade not for gaming, unless a 21" viewable is still better than what you got now

Meh, 800x600 doesn't look so bad on my (1920x1200) laptop in Oblivion...
Granted, I can still sometimes barely get playable frames outside with all the grass and trees off.

lol, Otto is my current fav civ too
lol7900GT handles Oblivion on my 1920x1200 HP L2335 23" Widescreen without a hitch. I don't have everything maxxed, but I have a LOT of stuff turned on. The card cost less than $300. If you can afford the 23-24" monitor, you can probably afford a 7900GT.
And even though I have one, right now, if you can afford a 7900GT, you can afford a discounted X1900XT and be a lot happier.

But I ran games on my 2001FP below the 1600x1200 and they always looked really good to me, say at 12x10 or whatever.
So if you want the nice 24" real estate for general use, why don't you just scale down the games to a lower widescreen rez if the video card can't handlie it?

Nope, just thec stock MSI overclock. I don't have AA on as I can hardly notice the difference considering the huge performance hit, but everything else is maxed at 1920x1600. I still haven't got around to trying FEAR at that resoution but I xpect I'll need to turn shadows down a bit, but the 7600GT is a surprisingly powerful card for the money. I wish people would stop trying to talk others out of buying 24" monitors using this argument as it is false. I don't own Oblivion so I can't try that out, although I would certainly need to turn some stuff down.
Due to an LCD monitors design dropping the res will result in reduced image quality, although they are gettings better at interpolating the pixels in the software now. Running windows at a reduced res still looks a bit funky but in games it is hardly noticeable on a modern LCD.
No way man. It'll play, but it won't be pretty. Ok yes it will, but the forest will probably suck your system's soul.
Me! It's hard enough at 1680x1050 with my 20" ws lcd. My poor 6600gt will be struggling
iamaelephant - I wonder what your FPS will be running Oblivian or FEAR with that card at that res. Every now and then someone comes along and claims everyone else is vastly overstating how much graphics horsepower game require, and almost invariably when they actually measure their FPS they find it's quite low. Nothing wrong with you not being as sensitive to low FPS numbers as the rest of us (in fact, it's probably a good thing), but it doesn't mean we're overstating the requirements for the majority to have en enjoyable experience.
amheck - Same issue. For you it may not bother you to run a non-native res, but to a lot of us it really lowers visual quality, to far below CRT levels. That's why you see running a non-native res hardly ever recommended as a way to improve speeds.

TELL ME ABOUT IT. Now also, please tell me where I can find a good condition one in stock from a place that will ship and doesn't want $$$$ for it.
