Had to get my tint removed from my car so it can pass state inspection.
I took it to a guy who said he'd take care of it in the morning. He said it shouldn't take more than an hour and cost about $99. I went ahead and said ok since he made it sound difficult.

I took it in this morning and he looked at it and said I had some sort of "laminate" (spelling?) tint and that it would take at least 3 hours to take off. He told me to drop off the car on Monday morning and it'll cost $130.00

I went to Advanced Auto parts and bought this "tint removal kit". It was basically a spray bottle of some solution and a razor blade  Cost about $5.00
I sprayed it on and started on the front window and within 5 minutes, I had it all off! Spent another 25 minutes and I got all the tint off :) All that's left is to spray it some more and scrape all the glue off. What exactly would the guy have done with the extra 2.5 hours? Or was that a line of crap?

Either way, I'm happy because I saved myself $130 :)

Technically you only saved $125. But good for you either way. The guy was probably just trying to rip you off.

Uhmm... you could've done it without any special "kits".

The solution is 50/50/ ammonia/water.

Well, they have to make money oto, and if you pay without doing your homework, then it's your fault.

They can't just come out and say "I could do that for 5$."

A certain degree of tint is illegal in states because it's impossible for law enforcement officers to see into the car to and ascertain if there are potentially armed occupants sitting in the rear seats.

Ooh. He could have saved $128.50 as opposed to $125. What a waste.

In Cali you can go as dark as you want on the rear window and any rear glass behind the driver's door. You cannot tint the driver's door or the windshield at all though...legally that is.

I know what is illegal and what is not, but I'm saying, why would you ever pay someone to put an illegal tint on your window, knowing it is illegal, and knowing you will have to remove it after a certain amount of time for an inspection?

I think the legal tints are perfectly dark enough...I think it is 35 vlt here in WA on the sides, 6" strip on the windshield, and 20 vlt on the back.

Hah, you have to remove your tint to pass inspection in MD? Where I live in PA we have some of the most strict tint laws in the US, but I always take it to my dealership for inspection and never fail because of it, and I'll never ever take off my tint.

I just saved myself 25 years to life in prison because I was going to murder the OP, but decided against it. So there, I win!

Well it doesn't have to be removed to pass inspection. They only allow 35% and my car came from texas where they allow 25% so it was too dark.
