I'm using my main PC as listed in my signature. It has been a bit since I last played borderlands and had no problems with it before that I remember. Got some friends playing it again so I decided to fire it back up by reinstalling it. I hadn't played it in ages so I grabbed the expansion packs and the latest patch as well. Basically after about 10 minutes of playing windows pops up a message saying I'm running out of memory and needs to close borderlands. I can ignore the message for about 20 to 30 minutes more, maybe, and then my system finally locks up. When I get the message borderlands is typically taking 3 GB to 3.5 GB worth of memory up! Not sure what the hell is causing it.

I think I last played borderlands on my q9550 with vista 64 and 4GB of memory with the 4870x2 card. It ran smooth as silk for hours on end. Not sure what the hell is going on with this memory leak for it. I tried a few google searches but I can't seem to find any concrete solution to my problem. Also posts talking about mem leaks are from a year ago or so, and nothing recent about mem leaks.

You have a windows paging file? Did all the updates for Borderlands?

Using an SSD and originally had the page file set to 500MB, but switched it back to managed and it was still doing that. I also did all the updates. I do not own the steam version so I had to use the manual 1.30 patch. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I was getting the memleak as well without the expansion DLCs.

well, searching around I tried these three suggestions. I turned of the Catalyst AI, I disabled Crossfire, and I set the processor affinity for the game to only one core. Doing all three stopped the memory leak.

Now I just need to narrow down what is the exact cause. Is it the combination of all three or only one of them? Either way it is still screwed up that I was getting a memory leak from any of those.

I have the same problem since I started playing Borderlands again after a month or so of inactivity. I have 4GB of memory in a Windows 7 Home Premium x64 system, Q6600 @ 3,4 Ghz, 2 x 4770 crossfire.

My system hangs after 15 minutes with no memory left. I think its the ATI 10.6 drivers that causes the problem, I will install 10.5 again and see what happens. Otherwise I'll try your suggestions.

Disable Catalyst AI and see if that helps ...

It's a known issue with this particular game and this is the solution for now. Unfortunately disabling the AI also disables Crossfire. However, the game will run great on a single 5870 for you. I had the exact same issue and this is how it was solved.

I installed driver 10.5 again and the memory leak disappeared. Been playing Borderlands for 3 hours and the highest I saw in the taskmanager was 1215 MB.

Confirmed culprit = Catalyst 10.7

I updated to 10.7 = BL eat up tons of RAM until it crashes and thrashes my swap file for minutes. Revert to 10.6 = No problem.

Yup, new drivers have fixed it. Catalyst 10.8 just came out yesterday. Download, update and enjoy. :)
