Just reminiscing. Anyone remember "XTree Gold"?

Remember deleting massive directories without DOS Smartdrive enabled. When you forgot to enable it you had to sit and watch the files get removed for ages...lol

Oh yeah and running MemMaker to try and get as much Extended memory as possible so that DOS games would run and trying to get as close as 640k as possible. What was the other program used to get as much extended momory as possible. Qemm7 or something like that.

I broke my computer so many times running QEMM. In an effort to get those picky DOS games working, I'd end up running QEMM and breaking a whole bunch of other programs. I can trace my back my history of computer troubleshooting and tweaking back to trying to fix what QEMM broke 🙂

Hehe...it was like that wasn't it. I spent more time watching my PC re-booting in those days. 😀
 
QEMM was a godsend for most things I did under DOS 5. How I hated the out of memory messages. Then again, my config.sys, autoexec.bat were really bare, so QEMM didn't change much of my config.

Xtree was also a great DOS application! It was always so easy to navigate the system with Xtree, but when Win95 came and we had explorer.exe, Xtree hit the dirt.

Did you when you installed Win95 for the first time go back to Win 3.11 cos you couldn't stand it. Lol I did. 🙂
 
XTree Gold was the best directory / file management tool ever -- I'm still annoyed at MS for not offering a split-view of both source and destination folders in one instance like XTG had.

There is supposedly some XTG-inspired file manager for Windows, but I've never gotten around to tracking it down.
 
I loved the old days because I was one of the "gurus". Nowadays everything is so simple everyone can do it "almost". I used 386max for memory management. It worked great.
 
yes, and i was quite happy having forgot it.

i'm also reminicing about having to do a lot of work to install win95

boot off floppy, install CD drivers, boot to computer, copy entire cd to HDD (my nice big 540MB drive that is) and then cd win95. setup.exe 🙂 ah, those were the days 🙂

i much prefer booting off a cd nowadays
 
Yeah, i remember XTree Gold... and Qemm. Anybody remember Desqview? LOL gawd, the memories.

EDIT: to those that don't know, Desqview was the first multitasker for DOS... yep, that's right... back then you could only run one program at a time.

yeap how can u forget, btw that was at the same time Windows/386 and Windows/286 came out and both of which I used. Kidz have it good these days.

You now truly appreciate you computer after using Windows/286 on a 4 Mhz VGA 20 Meg HD. I was working on a 5 Meg Ashton Tate dBase III+ database and took about 3hrs just to sort.

Norton Anti-Virus would fit on a punched out 5 1/4 floppy but then went Hight Tech to 3.5

ah yes .... the memories.
 
XTree Gold was good.

It effectively lives on in this program called ZTreeWin and is designed to work under Windows.

Damm you Andy! Beat my by an hour! I just saw the link on BetaNews. While my company somehow wound up owning XTree (owning as in the rights/trademarks/source/etc), even I'm tempted to check this ZTree out. Definately got the look and feel right 😉

It's funny when you think about it. Xtree Gold is old, but it still seems more intitutive then explorer in Windows. I use Powerdesk, it looks like Explorer but really nice extras. The win port of Xtree (ztree) is cool, full screen, with no win gui.
I found it last year when I was doing some searching on the web, and found out the original programmer of Xtree had cancer. I actually sent him an E-Mail. His program is one of the best ever...
 
Ahhh.... The days of XTree, 386Max and the PharLap 32 bit Dos Extender.

I loved XTree, but I certainly do NOT miss having to deal with Extended/Expanded memory.
