just registered to ebay. why did it change my id?

i gave it my id but ebay decided to add a few random letters to it. wth? it didn't mention of any name collisions. i tried to login with the original name and it said invalid name so it's not registered. is this normal?
 
I used my email address and they changed that because they said that it was too easy for fraud to occur with email addys.
