Just received a telephone call from US Bank

I have one Visa through US Bank. I always pay off my card each month so my credit is quite well. In fact, I called them a few weeks ago and asked them to lower my credit limit. Not that I don't have self control but if my card is ever stolen, it would hinder the perpetrator.

Well the Fraud prevention department called me this morning and woke me up. The first question she asked (other than May I speak to Tyler?) was, "Are you or have you recently been in Mexico?" ?Um, no ma?am. Who did you say this was again?? Seems that there was a $19.xx charge in Mexico. US Bank allowed that one to go through but they flagged my account. Then came a series of charges. US Bank denied each of those. Awesome! My credit card company is looking out for me!

Well the canceled my card and will be sending me a new one along with some fraud paperwork to fill out.

Not sure how anyone received my credit card. For most online purchases, I use Paypal.

they sent you a telephone? whats that have to do w/ your credit card?

anyway, i had a $100 charge from bestbuy.com on my debit card, no idea what it was from, so i called the bank and they cancelled the card and promised me any overdrafts would be waived while it was under investigation. I still had to go to the bank, fill out paperwork, and wait a week to get a new card.

I had nothing but tears and heartache with the jerks at US Bank. Great Western Bank has far surpassed them in every way thus far.

I was wondering that too, glad I wasn't the only one.

Why oh why would you lower your credit limit to frustrate a potential thief?

AMEX always calls me. I am a reseller, so I make charges on the card in various amounts all within several minutes of each other as I split up the charges to 1 per unit.

That always really annoys me. I'm a Brit and everytime i come over to the US (whether I warn my CC company or not) they always flag the card then it starts being rejected. They always try and call me and then wonder why they can't get hold of me... The number of times i've had to borrow money off friends so i can get a calling card and call the company is really starting to annoy me!

I hope I don't have this problem when I go to Europe this summer.

By federal law, you aren't responsible for fraudulent charges on a credit card in most cases, and in the worst case you are only responsible for $50.

Thus, lowering your credit limit is useless in your own protection. In fact, you could just be hurting your credit score.

Why? Plastic is easier, and more secure. When I went to Europe, I thought about travellers checks, but then said fvck it. It was a lot easier, just going to an ATM, and withdrawing the money. My bank favored the USD, so I got a hellova better exchange rate (almost 1.5x better than a travellex or somesuch place). I brought some cash with me too, but wish I didn't, I got shafted on the exchange rate.

I didnt warn my bank beforehand that I was going, and they didn't flag my card, so maybe I just got lucky? I made two large withdrawals, one in London, and one on my way to Paris.

The higher the amount, the more trouble it is to straighten out. I lowered my limit and only I can ask them to raise it. Should I decide to purchase something that is over my limit, I just call them up, and they raise it.

most CC companies are using complex advanced uber software to look for purchases that don't match your usage patterns. it is good

no...just call them and say you're going to Country X for X days and they'll put a note in your account so when it gets flagged you won't get rejected.
