WOOHOO!!!
Yes, against the wishes and advice of pretty much everyone around me, I told my boss I'll be gone after Christmas (this was waaaay back in August.) Y'all have heard me bitch and whine about my job before--to summarize, a new grad with little experience really shouldn't join an UNFUNDED (i.e. no VC money) startup consulting firm and expect major coinage. I rarely receive any bonuses whatsoever for the hard hours I've put in over the last 2+ years (nevermind that bonuses are in my employment contract) and recently management has started to irk me (lots of stupid projects that don't make money.)
Since making my decision I've been planning my next move--be it grad school, a new job, some training, starting my own business or taking over my father's company. Its been almost four months and I still haven't made a decision! First I was looking at project management, and I found a really cool, really affordable, and nationally recognized masters program I could take online. Unfortunately, I also realized that I didn't have the experience necessary (most of my classmates would be in their mid 30s to early 40s, and I'm 24.)
The reason I want to move into management is that eventually I'd like to go to business school and earn my MBA. But what I've noticed in the past couple of months is that most of the good management training programs at Fortune 500 firms only hire directly out of schools. I don't know how someone who's been out of school a few years can get in. Eventually I want to be on a career path that will lead me to being CIO of a decent-sized company, so that means I'll need to beef up my project management skills in addition to some certifications and formal IS training.
Another option I've thought more about was doing some web design work. I have a natural flair for design and I'm pretty good with CorelDraw and Freehand, but I have never had any formal training. I've done a lot of the creative/marketing work at my current firm and that's probably the work I enjoy doing most. I figured it might be enough to take some basic PHP/MySQL/scripting/Flash classes and then transition into managing the work at a design firm. I'm just worried that its too late to get into the game now and that it won't payoff until much later (web designers don't make much these days right?)
Cliff's Notes:
- Told boss I'm quitting, this is my last week, don't know what I'm doing after the holidays
- Need to make a decision--can't decide between grad school, holding out for a good job, certifications or training (Information systems and/or web design)
- I guess I'm also torn between doing what I love/what I want to do and doing something where I'll make lots of money...
