just realized I upgraded my video card and made money.

I bought a 680 from newegg for 480, and sold my 6950 for 180. Then I sold my 680 for 580 and bought a 7850 for 260...sorry if OT, but thought it was kinda funny!!

I know people that will not shop online. So maybe this was one of those purchases. If you consider sales tax here, its only 35 dollars above retail, and its available.

So you went from a HD6950 to GTX680...upgrade.

Then went from a GTX680 to HD7850 and you say you upgraded? No way...you way downgraded there.

So basically the retailer you bought your item from got the 680 for a 3rd of the cost they sold it to you for and beat your income by about 1700%? :p Free upgrades are nice, however you're still stuck using an ATI card so not much of an upgrade really.

A 7850 is 10% faster than a 6950 when both are at stock. An Oced 7850 is about as fast as a 7950 so about 40-50% faster than a Oced 6950

He got a nearly 50% upgrade in performance for just $20, I doubt there are too many such cases at AT. It is like going from a GeForce 560 oc to 580 stock assuming both are locked for further oc.

They're pretty much even at stock. I've seen some websites give edge to the 7850, and others the 6950. But, with a 6950, unlock, and overclock to ~920, you're looking at a 15% performance boost. With a 7850, you can get ~35% I believe, if you go to ~1200 core.

So it's not 40-50% faster than an overclocked 6950, but you can probably pull off 20% extra, which is pretty decent when you're pulling less power.

Wrong. As an index 7870 is about 10% faster. Most 6950s don't unlock, many do. And even unlocked 6950s just give 5-10% extra performance after overclock. An Oced 7850 is easily a 35-45% boost which means a 40% performance gain net. In some situations it will be just 25-30% but often it will near 50%. And being newer tech it will only get better with newer games due to tesselation etc. it is on avg 35-40% better even as of today

And it just cost him $20. It is difficult to even get 10% performance for $20, he got 30-40% extra which is easily worth $100-200 based on the card tier. In this case around $100s performance which got subsidized by his 680 sale

Not a fan of people who overcharge people for video cards like the 680. If i had a 680 and was selling it i would easily sell it for what i paid for it not 100 dollars more.

The point I made was how can you downgrade from a 680 and then consider that a good thing?

You do realize I said ~920, which would make an unlocked 6950 faster than a 6970 right? And 6970 is at stock ~10% faster than a 6950. An unlocked 6950 at 6970 speeds is roughly 10% faster. That's ~880 core. 920 is another 4.5%, hence you can get ~15% extra performance.

If you're going pull magical 1.3ghz 50% overclocks as your reference, then at least be fair and use some magical 1ghz+ overclocks on the 6900s. So until then, no you're not going to get 40-50% extra performance when compared to a 6950. Or maybe you will in one of those numerous console ports that use massive amounts of tessellation...

He made an upgrade from 6950 to 7850. He probably doesn't need a 680

Well, then he bought it just to rip someone off. Lame...no better than people buying consoles they aren't gonna use and smashing them so nobody else can have it or listing it up for $300 above MSRP.

OP, congrats on a better card and pocketng extra $$$ in the process ;).

A 7850 is 10% faster than a 6950 when both are at stock. An Oced 7850 is about as fast as a 7950 so about 40-50% faster than a Oced 6950

While an overclocked 7850 can approach 7950 in some games, the 2nd part of your statement is not even close. I've seen you post this many times and I decided to call you on it because you are simply spreading false information without any proof that may leave potential upgraders, who are not as lucky as OP to have upgraded for "free", disappointed.

HD6950 OCed ~ HD6970. On average a GTX680 is 50-55% faster than an HD6970, while HD7970 is 40-45% faster. Can HD7850 OC reach GTX680 speeds? Nope. It can't even touch a stock 7970 on average. So how can it be 40-50% faster on average than an overclocked 6950? It can't be.

Also even from your own comments that an HD7850 OC = HD7950 but suddenly that means HD7950 is 40-50% faster than an overclocked 6950? Not sure if serious. Computerbase found that HD7950 is 18% faster than HD6970, not 40-50%. Hardware Canucks also found 7950 to be 18% faster overall and just 15% at 1080P over the 6970. Your numbers are way off. HD7950 would need to be overclocked to 1000-1050mhz to be 50% faster than an overclocked/unlocked 6950.

While it's an upgrade, it's more like 18-20% (25% is pushing it) on average if HD7850 is overclocked, not 40-50% as you claim. It could be 40-50% faster in few select games. But I mean we can pick select 1-2 games but there are plenty of games where HD7850 is way slower than an HD6950 OC = HD6970 to begin with.

Overall, you are assigning this generation of mid-range cards way too much performance that's simply not there. Even when HD7870 was overclocked to 1250mhz, it beat an HD6970 (Oced 6950) by 33% in a game where 6900 series is known to struggle. So how in the world can an overclocked HD7850 beat an overclocked 6950 by 40-50% on average since an overclocked 7850 would be slower than an overclocked 7870? :sneaky:

Techreport Review

That's at least 3 trusted reviews: TechReport, Computerbase and Hardware Canucks that all show your estimates are too optimistic.

I find it funny how some seem to think that the 7850 is a magic card priced at 250$ that overclocked will surpass 400$ cards which in turn somehow can't be overclocked.

HD7850 is a decent card in its class, but it's been crazy overhyped. I guess with more hype it'll outperform a GTX690 and cure aids. The card only has 1024 SPs vs. 1536 for the 6970.

Even when HD7870 was overclocked, it's not much faster than an HD6970. I also want to know how HD7950 suddenly became 40-50% faster than an overclocked HD6950 = HD6970?

Since people claim that 1080P is not a real resolution as of late, I'll even use the "manly" 2560x1600.

This is easily the worst performance increase from one generation to the next, especially on the AMD side since HD7870 is a $350 replacement for the $230 HD6870. Now people are claiming HD7850 OC is 40-50% faster than last generation 6970? I didn't get the memo.

What's next? An overclocked 7770 will beat an HD6970/GTX580?

People also don't realize one simple fact. Every card has it's price/performance slot where they fit. The 7850 is a card that is in the 6950/560Ti segment. The 7870 is for the 6970/GTX570 and so on. Another example is the whole GTX670 vs. 7970 argument is pointless since the GTX670 crushes its direct competitor for the 400$ segment, the 7950 (taking with it the 7870 also if it stays at 360$).

Exactly. Someone who was on the fence might spend another $50-70 from $330-350 HD7870 to get a much faster 670 but that buyer is unlikely to suddenly raise his/her budget to $450-500 7970. Also, while some HD7950s can overclock 50%, GTX670 OC gives that level of performance out of the box. This is the first time in 10 years where I am seeing people being indifferent to playing the 40% overclocking lottery or buying a card that is guaranteed to perform that fast for more or less the same price.

Also the resale value of 7950 is going to plummet because not everyone overclocks.

7950 is a horrible buy for $400. What happens if yours craps out at 1125mhz? Oops.

In what universe is a GTX 680 to HD 7850 an "upgrade"? I want what you're smoking.
