Got a new 160gb hard drive so I figured I'd reinstall Windows XP Pro with it (fresh start). Anyway, now that it is re-loaded, I can't get DVD's to play in Windows Media Player 9.0. It gives me an error "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your system". I'm totally confused. I've never had to add/install anything other than Windows in order to play a DVD through WMP. If I click "web help" on that same window that popped open, it takes me to a Microsoft site where I can BUY a decoder software package. What the heck is goin on here! lol

Here's the setup:
P4 2.5g
512mb
160gb
dvd+/- burner
cd burner
dvd rom
geforce4 FX5600U

edit:
discovered this MEGA codec pack, installed it, and my problems are gone!

I don't remember ever having to install a codec before, but oh well I guess! Maybe this post can help someone out in the future...

in your old system, did you ever install an mpeg2 codec or do it indirectly through installing something like windvd?

i don't remember ever installing anything else, but looks like i needed a codec (see OP, i posted a link to a mega-codec pack). problem solved now. :D it is a good possibility that the codec was installed through something else, just as you suggested. so you're probably 100% correct! thanks!
