Just ran over a stray dog and feel terrible about it.

It was a pup, barely 2 months old. Was cuddling with its mother in the middle of the street. As i approached the duo, I blew my horn; but I don't know what the stupid son of a bitch was thinking, he ran towards me instead of getting away.

The front wheel of my scooter went over him, even as I tried to stop. He squealed, the typical screech that dogs emit when they're in pain. He quickly scurried away from below my scooter and made his way to safety.

The mother bitch started to bark at me, and plus the fact that I couldn't have done anything about it, I left. But now I feel terrible about it. I don't know what happened, if he'll live, die or be permanently disabled.

In retrospect, it was probably my fault. I expected him to run away when I honked my horn, like most strays do; but being young and inexperienced in the ways of the world, he dashed in the way of my scooter.

God I feel so awful. :|

Sad. It's probably best if he dies though. Better that than live the rest of his life maimed on the street. If he really was a stray he probably had euthanasia in his future anyway.

Didn't even know about them...

Actually, stray dogs are a big and controversial issue in most cities here. Many people consider them a menace and want them spayed/euthanised, while other disagree, saying its inhuman.

My city's authorities recently ordered the dogs be castrated but had to stop after some animal welfare NGOs challenged this order in court.

Stray dogs in India live challenging lives, to say the least. Especially in the more 'urban' parts of the cities. Dogs in the suburbs live good lives, though, feeding on leftovers from households and chasing cars.

I'm a big animal fan however when it comes to driving your safety and anyone else on the roads safety is far more important. Breaking hard or swerving hard or even doing something unexpected can put others at risk. Trading a dogs life for a humans life is not a good trade. Learn from it, drive slower and accept mistakes happen.

Ah, didn't realize you were in India. Yeah, it's a big problem in a lot of developing countries I've been to. Stray cats were all over the place in Cuba. I guess people can't afford to have them spayed and neutered so they just breed out of control.

I don't know what loopy NGO was against neutering. I'm pretty sure even PETA is in favour of that.

I've seen several stray dogs survive much worse than what you describe (bigger and faster vehicles) with no lasting injuries that I could tell (after an extended recovery period of limping all over the neighborhood).

It happens. It sucks but many times there isn't anything you can really do.

Ran over a squirrel, once, on my MTB. He was on the right, I moved left, he squirts left and thump, thump. Got him with both tires and 200+lbs of weight. When I came back through, he was gone. Super squirrel?
