How about going outside... looking at some trees, maybe women or men, whatever you're into.
Or do what most MMO players do which is both? This is such a silly thing to say. Stop being sucked in by the internet so much and use your own judgment. There are over 10,000,000 subscriptions to WoW alone. Do you honestly believe that most of these subscribers live in front of their computers? That is a very false assumption. It might be their favorite hobby but that doesn't mean they do not have lives outside of that hobby.
LOL! You know it was poking a jab at Powernick! Sheesh! Calm down!
In all honesty, I would say that there is a good portion of those 10 million subscriptions that, for all intents, WoW is their
life.
I would verture a guess that a conservative guestimate is 20% of those are multi-account owners. I would also venture a guess that a good 40% would be hardcore gamers - the kind you see doing the back to back raids, for 12 hours at a time.
I am sorry, but as a former WoW-crack addict myself, it's a very true assumption. If you consider (as an example) an adult "gamer" waking up, logging into WoW for 30 minutes to check his/her auctions, logging off, going to work, stopping at McDonald's on the way home for dinner, logging into WoW to raid for the next 8 hours, getting 6 hours of sleep, then repeating the process the next day a life, then more power to you.
I will agree there are more then "a few" casual gamers in WoW. But this right here from the OP's post says it all:
Finally quit wow after selling my accounts and restarting more than 3 times. Every time I quit I end up coming back as other games just don't compare. What games should I add to my collection? I am more an RPG/RTS kinda guy but I like FPS too.
In any event, Powernick! Get Sins!!! It is much wonderous goodness! I have yet to even try Multiplayer...
I don't even think that 40% of the WoW community raids let alone raid back to back for 12 hours at a time. For shits and giggles, let's play with some numbers. Keep in mind that I chose to do this more so out my own curiosity than anything. It was kind of fun.
Things we know:
1. There are over 10,000,000 subscribers
2. There are sites which scan the armory and produce data that ranks guilds in terms of raid progression such wowjutsu.
3. Based on wowjutsu, my guild ranks at about 3000 or so. Keep in mind we are a casual raiding guild meaning 2 nights a week at about 3.5-4 hours per night. We just hit Hyjal.
Let's make some reasonable estimates:
1. We have about 40 people total which raid. About 30 of them raid regularly. However, let's just assume all 40 raid regularly.
2. Let's also assume that the other 3000 guilds have 40 people who raid regularly.
3. These 3000 guilds are not all hardcore raiders putting in the hours you are suggesting, but let's assume they all do anyways just to make the number easier and it should provide an over estimate.
4. Let's go ahead and run some separate calculations assuming that 20% of accounts are owned by multi-account owners.
The math:
3000 * 40 = 120000 raiders
120000/10000000 = 0.012
0.012 = 1.2%
Therefore, assuming the top 3000 guilds are all hardcore raiders (obviously if my guild is a part of that bunch then this assumption is false), no guilds below that rank consist of the hardcore type, and they all have 40 members then we are talking 1.2% of all wow subscribers. That's much less than 40%.
To be fair and hopefully lessen the margin of error, lets bump up the number of raiders in each of these guilds from 40 to 100 which is obviously an overestimate but it might make up for my use of the 3000 number.
3000 * 100 = 300000 raiders
300000/10000000 = 0.03
0.03 = 3.0%
3% vs 40%
Performing the same calculations assuming your estimate that 20% of the accounts are multi-account owners means we just need to exchange the 10000000 number for 8000000.
3000 * 40 = 120000 raiders
120000/8000000 = 0.015
0.015 = 1.5%
or...
3000 * 100 = 300000 raiders
300000/8000000 = 0.0375
0.0375 = 3.75%
Now, do I honestly care if this stereotype about the average WoW player revolving their entire lives around the game continues to spread? Not really. I am sick of hearing it because it is obviously false, but I don't take it personally. I hope that the above estimates (even when considering some margin of error) put things in better perspective though.
