Ah, for the $50 difference I probably would have went with that one myself if it had been available...the Spirit is a little smaller

At the time, it was $100 cheaper than the E-330.

Yeah the Spirit is way too small for my needs. :D

You guys are making me hungry. I haven't grilled in 6-7 years. I got tired of my rickety desk (tract home, cheap deck 10" off ground) and fighting with the f-ing wasps trying to get at my food. I'm allergic to wasp stings and usually walk around with an Epipen.

Damn, I use to grill 5-6 days a week, before 'nature' started hating me. Now I eat out at restaurants giving my money away.

A weber gold kettle might produce enough smoke to keep bugs away.

But....where do you put the charcoal in that thing?

I like the weber gassers but they take so long to get to high temps that you might as well use charcoal. Fantastic grills, but something about the newer ones seem to take at least 20 minutes to hit 400f temps.

After cycling through a bunch of good gas grills I eventually got a green egg and love it.

The new Weber gas grills (post the 2011 redesign) get hot very fast - Up over 550 degrees in about 15 minutes, at least for the Genesis grills. That was certainly a problem with the older generation Webers, but not the new ones.

You think natural gas would do that? I know it burns a little cooler.

Damn...whachoo talkin bout, Willis?

I have a 2005 Weber Genesis Gold grill that (according to the temp gauge) hits about 600 degrees in 10 or so minutes...great for cooking off anything stuck to the grates from the previous use.

I like beer can chicken...SHOULD be done at about 350 degrees. I have a hard time getting the Weber to heat that low...even with 2 of the 3 burners turned off, it still wants to creep up to about 400.

How long do they take to cool back down?

Yea, mine's around 2006 vintage, a bottom-end product and with only 2 burners will get to well over 500 degrees in about 10 minutes, I usually wait an extra 5 just to be sure the cooking grates are as hot as possible as well.

No shit...I turned mine on to verify function and broke 150 in less than a minute with only 2 burners going...that's how I found out one of the burner ignition wires wasn't fully plugged in

Would love to see you guys test these weber gassers getting to 500f.

The old old ones, 80's to early 90's, were not that bad. Still a solid 15 minutes at least to 500f.

Then in the late 90's they changed something with the design and it would take 25-30 minutes to get to temp. I've seen it firsthand on both a cheap 2-burner and one of the larger ones.

Maybe they're better as of very recently, I can't attest to anything after 2005 era or so. These issues were widely discussed on the bbq boards back then.

Don't get me wrong, I love weber to the core, but if I'm using a gas grill it's for super easy and QUICK cooking.

My Weber Genesis S-330 will easily hit 650-700 F in less than 10 minutes if I turn on all 3 burners plus the sear station burner. It's not even a contest between gas and charcoal when it comes to speed. I also own Weber One-Touch Gold 22.5" charcoal grill and Weber 18.5" Smokey Mountain charcoal smoker so it's not like I don't have experience with Weber charcoal grills.

As I posted earlier in this thread, that problem was addressed in the 2011 redesign.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm firing mine up for it's first use tonight so I'll time it...but I have no doubt it will be ready to cook in 10 minutes or less

Dang, you and I have almost the same grills. :D

Weber One-Touch Gold 22.5" vs Weber One-Touch Black 22.5"
Weber Smokey Mountain 18.5" vs Weber Smokey Mountain 18.5"

Any other alternate recommendations?I don't really want to go above 200 dollars.

You can smoke in a $100 Weber kettle. It is just a bit more work. I have done ribs in my kettle, I can smoke for about 3-4hrs on a single fuel load using the Minion method which is enough time for babyback ribs.

You can make it a bit easier with one of these http://www.smokenator.com

It's time for a Briquettes vs Lumps debate. :D

I use Kingsford charcoal because it's cheap and readily available. $10 for two 20lb bags at Home Depot, Lowes, or Walmart during the Memorial, 4th July, and Labor day sales. Can't beat that.
