Just put Linux on a laptop. A video question?

I just installed Mandrake 7.1 on my Armada 7730MT (P166, 80MB RAM). Everything is great except for one problem. When it's set to 1024x768 resolution I only see a portion of the desktop in KDE or Gnome. Everything you can see looks great, but you can't get to the menu bar at the bottom of the screen and most windows run off the desktop. If I set things to 800x600 I can see everything, but it looks crappy. The fonts are terribly bitmapped and such that everything is hard to read and looks ugly. Any tips? I'd like to leave this os on it, but if it's going to look crappy like that I know I won't use it much. It will just bug me to much.

TIA! :)

sounds like the screen is stretched off the laptop display. try the vertical stretch controls?

Nope, it doesn't have any controls for that as far as I can tell. Any other ideas?
