Just put in my 2 weeks :(

I just resigned from my job 🙁 Not by choice as my student visa (OPT) has run out. I'm still waiting for a new work permit (it's going to take ~100 days). Being unemployed for that long is going to be a challenge. Just had to share. 🙁

what are you going to do with all that time off monk3y?

hang in there!

I have a degree in Zoology and want to get more into field work. I currently work in a lab but in the past I've applied to several jobs that involve working out in the field and never got it because of the lack of experience. So I'm going to volunteer out in the field, who knows this could be a blessing in disguise.

well, good luck in that regard... volunteer work in your applicable field is fantastic for your resume. kudos for that as well because not many people would spend their time off doing volunteer work.

You do know that doing volunteer work (if it is a position that someone is usually paid for) is illegal too.
Just letting you know as these things can come back to bite you sometimes.

Nah, they're volunteer positions through the University of Florida. Students can either use it as credit or others can simply use it for experience.

hey monk3y, I am on OPT too. So you are saying you can stay in the US after the OPT expires as long as you find another job?

Not at all. I am lucky in the fact that I've applied for citizenship through my sister (who is now an American citizen). Since that application has went through I am now able to apply for a work permit.

If you don't have a relative or someone to marry, the ideal situation would be to get a job that will sponsor you. Many corporations have work permits that they will give out to foreigners. The main problem is that there is a limited amount of work permits given out each year. I believe the quota for 2006 has already been met (the permits are given out at the beginning of the fiscal year I believe). There are also a host of employers that are exempt from this 'quota'. These include state universities and some other places like the CDC, NIH, (you'll have to look the others up).

If you have some questions feel free to PM me... I don't know everything but I might be able to help you out.
