Ok guys I just purchased the AMD 64 3200. I am concerned with the amount of noise this thing may or may not produce. The stock on my AMD xp 2200 is horrible, and I am really going for a quiet PC this time around. Should I spend the extra $25 on a thermaltake silentboost or does the stock hsf keep the noise down?

Anyone that has tried to use the stock hsf please comment:)

I dont think mine is that noisy. When you get it all set up try it out and see if you think its quiet enough. If its not then order another hsf. My favorite is the Zalman 7000alcu, great cooling and very quiet.

Thanks bw86, did you use the thermal pad that came with it? I am using an Antec Sonata case, so hopefully that can help muffle any noise.

Antec Sonata is very loud..how can your bear it? I had to 5V rear 120mm fan to tolerate back in the day... Maybe that should be first concern? SHSF is very quiet compared to that.

LOL omg dont tell me that. It is not set up yet Im waiting for the cpu and nf4 chaintech board to come in the mail. The darn thing says " world's quietest" and "silence is beautiful" right on the outside of the box!

My old amd xp sounds like a phantom thunder vacuum cleaner so I guess it is all relative.

My second questions is, do you think the the thermal pad that comes with the retail hsf is ok? I can buy a shin etsu thermal pad or some AS ceramique stuff if I need to.

Ya they all say that... 5v it trust me.

Thermal pad is fine... You won't be able to overclcok but 5-10% anyway with that mobo since it can't post past 225FSB.

PS After you 5V your case fan, and still find SHSF loud the best bet is a Zalman CPNS 7000.. Course you have video card noise.. hard drive noise and PSU noise... Maybe you should have asked me first if you truly wanted quiet:p

that 120 is intended to be at 5v
you are suposed to plug it into the fan only (5v) molex coming from the PSU
It was never intended to be ran at 12v
I believe the manual tells you that.
I keep all my fans on my zalman fan controller.
So i can adjust them to what im doing (idle@night, high for gaming...)

Yeah there is a "fan only" connector. I actually think my 6600Gt is going to be the loudest thing in the case. So until I can find a silent cooling alternative for it im sol. I was told by a online retailer the nv5 silencer does not line up with the holes in the card.

As far as o/c ing, it is a non issue for me. As long as my system is stable and will last me 2years I'm fine with it.

I can't believe you are saying that? Maybe they had a new revision because I can hear my Zalamn 7000 over my rear fan. What case is quieter. My 3700 BQE is a lot louder than my Sonata.
In any case, just cover the side case holes that spell out Antec with black tape.

The stock hsf is pretty quiet, especially if you enable Cool 'n' Quiet. My system is nearly silent when I'm not gaming and C'n'Q is enabled.

I would try the stock fan before you fo drop however much money. Depending on the mobo your fan can be very loud or very quiet.
