I did it...I ordered a new Athlon 64 3400+ and Asus K8V motherboard. I'm looking forward to cool & quiet along with the extra power of the A64.

Anyone want to buy an Athlon XP 2800 and motherboard?

:Q Whoa...you went for the Denny's Super Mega Artery Hardening Grand Slam of Ecstatic Doom Breakfast! :wine::cool: Good for you!!!

I mulled over an A64 rig and decided it wasn't for me right now. While mulling (can I say that???) I said to myself:

Self, the 3200 has the 1Mb cache while the 3000 doesn't. That's a no-brainer which to get. But is the 3400 worth the premium over the 3200 which has the same cache but a slightly lower clockspeed?

To me, it's not. But it's not my $$$! :D Cool that you can spring the extra moolah for the top o'the'line.

Good luck and let us know how it all works out.

May I suggest an interesting edit to your original post? Just list the system specs of what you're replacing with the A64 rig. Mobo/CPU/memory/OC info/cooling would be nice. :)

Oh sh!t. I just noticed your system specs ARE ALREADY listed in your sig. I will not edit my reply out of pride of ego. I shall leave it for comedic value. :D

I think the no brainer is the 3000+ for the good price. 512 to 1024 cache has not been shown to make that big of a difference especially considering that the actual clock speed of the processor is the same but you're paying a bit more

I too mulled over the price difference between the 3200 and the 3400 but then I said WTF and just bought the faster processor.

I took delivery of a pair of Western Digital Raptors just yesterday and I'm going to set them up in a RAID 0 array.

Now is the RAID SATA controller on your MB on its own channel to the southbridge like the non RAID SATA channels or is it tacked on the PCI bus? Does is also support tagged command queue-ing? [sic]

A 3400 is impressive. I like to see how far you can over clock it if you're willing to.

I'm not sure. See my specs below for the current mobo (although, I don't think I'm going to bother trying to set them up on my current system). I did order a promise RAID PCI card but I'm not sure if it would be better to use that or the motherboard controller. The new motherboard I ordered is the ASUS K8V which has onboard SATA/RAID: 4x Serial ATA Ports; RAID 0,1(2 SATA)/RAID 0,1,0+1(1x ATA133 & other 2 SATA) . I'm new to RAID, any suggestions? The two hard disks are both Western Digital 36GB 10000 rpm SATA Raptors.

The new PSU is in though and I'm using that computer now to type this reply.

Ya, I did the same thing, got an Athlon64 3200+/MSI K8T-Neo FISR2 Motherboard/74GB Ratpor Hard Drive. Should be pretty sweet! Good luck with your 3400+!

two raptors in RAID? what kind of performance do you want/need? that's gonna be quick.

You are correct good Sir Dude.

I shall update my sig as soon as the hardware is up and running. Don't want to be premature about this and jinx myself. :D

I am frequently copying large files (20 to 30+ MB) and it is just too slow on my current system. I'm hoping to speed that up significantly.

The extra processing power will be nice for gaming, editing and plain old windowing.

So far, not good. I had random reboots and BSODs after a format and clean install of WinXP. Now I can't even XP to load without a BSOD. A format and install results in a BSOD also. I'm going to play around with the memory settings tonight and try a lower clock speed (333MHz) to see if that makes it any more stable.

Before you try the 333, try CAS3-4-4-13 at 200 HTT (400DDR) no matter what your memory is rated at. I have read many other people with problems which is why every time i responded to input on an Athlon64 system, I recommended PC3500 CAS2. I will really be looking forward to your outcome.

Edit:And just for the heck of it, what are your temps ? A64 really runs cool, but if there is any problem with a non-standard HSF mounting, then ??? I get 32c idle and 42c full load after 2 hours, with the house at 68f (I know, mixing F and C, but ???)
