there are not words to describe how much better the orig is

I love how terribly awkward the old one looks. It's like they had 30 minutes to kill so they shot some random weird shit and decided to keep it because it correctly shows the upbeat yet dark atmosphere of jabba's party. Even when partying, he's never too busy to kill people.

The new one is just retarded. It's like they sat down and had a big meeting of how they were going to make a pointless scene. Then they probably spent weeks doing the animation for it.

That's the difference between those "you had to be there" moments vs trying to recreate those moments.

As my brother likes to say: "The scary part is that a group of adults sat around and actually thought doing that was a good idea."

I can't believe any sane person thought that scene was an improvement, so I have to believe it was Lucas' way of taking a shot at Star Wars fans and proving that they'll eat whatever shit he puts on a plate. He is probably sitting behind his mahogany desk and laughing at how he has pissed so many off.

For reference the special edition DVD's also include the original movie, but letterbox. Not widescreen.
When you zoom in it looks like hammered dog shit.

When he resisted releasing the theatrical cuts on DVD, he tried to claim that original negatives and master reels have been cut and edited, scanned and trashed to the point where they can never put it all together again (Humpty Dumpty). To perpetuate this lie, they used the LASERDISC as the master for the theatrical DVD (which Lucas had refused to produce, but fans DEMANDED it).

So which one will have the lower ultimate Amazon rating? The gimped version of Star Wars or the non-extended cuts of the LoTR triology on BR?

http://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Pic...4374783&sr=1-2

Awesome...1.5/5 stars over 3700 reviews.

Suck it money grubbing studios!

Hate to burst your bubble, but those reviews don't equate to sales figures....In our instant gratification society, the majority of the consumers want stuff now. They are not going to wait until the extended editions are released so many will buy by this now instead of later...

oh, I didn't remember that being in his review. lol. I still need to finish watching it. I love how it devolved into this seedy S&M-snuff sort of side-story, or whatever. I still need to finish it though.

do his later reviews have the same sort of distractions?

Yes.

I refuse to rebuy Spielbergs "update" of ET where all of the guns in the "bubble" scene get replaced with walkie talkies.

In the last Indiana Jones movie, when Indy tells Mutt:

IndianaJones said:
Sorry, kid. It looks like you just brought a knife...

[bad guys reach into their jackets]

...to a gun fight.

While I watched that (terrible) movie and Harrison Ford was delivering the line, I was BEGGING for the bad guys to pull out walkie-talkie radios!

George Lucas is the most successful troll ever. He's not getting another dime from me, either. It's not like he needs it, anyway.

Bastard.

I respect Lucas for that. Way to "Scrooge-McDuck everyone," ya Bastard!

That fact that he makes fucking billions from trolling is both impressive (most impressive) and infuriating at the same time.

If he really did wreck the original negatives just to make those shitty special editions he deserves some surprise buttsex with a cattle prod.

Yeah i hate that money grab BS. I will wait till the extended edition LoTR on BD is released. Im not going to buy the theatrical release only to rebuy it in a year when the extended version comes out. Must be a lot of suckers in this world that allow this to actually happen.

Ditto. When I first heard of LOTR on BD, I was ecstatic (I own all 3 extended editions of LOTR). I was so pissed off to hear they would not release the extended versions until later. Clearly a money grab to try to get you to buy the regular versions and then the extended versions. At least you could understand it with the LOTR extended DVD's due to all of the extra work integrating the deleted scenes from the original theatrical release.

When I heard Star Wars was going to be released on BD. I was hopeful it'd include the original theatrical releases as well as the bastardized versions. When I heard the originals were not going to be in, I was pissed off.

I know a lot of you guys were fine with the "re-envisioned" versions of Star Wars but small changes can have a profound effect. The biggest was probably Han Solo not shooting first. As others note, we go from a morally ambiguous scoundrel to a more flat character. There are other nitpicks here and there but it's surprising how so many fans of the originals hated the special edition versions. Contrast this with the Blade Runner versions where things are different but they don't try to change too much and most of the changes are actually well received.

Don't even get me started on the travesty that is episodes 1-3. There is no fucking redeeming value to the episode 1-3 trilogy.

1080p on a laptop and 1080p on a 50" ...

what's the difference... just depends how big of a picture you want it.

just get the DVD versions and allow the upscale automatic feature on your DVD/Bluray players?

1080p on the episodes II and III, maybe I could understand that. But Ep I, and 4-6.. stick with the DVD's.

Upscaling is not even close to the same as native high resolution content.

Why would you stick to DVDs for Episode 1 and 4-6 but watch 2 and 3 on Blu-ray? The resolution of 35mm film is considerably higher than 1080p so there's certainly a big advantage in a proper Blu-ray transfer. In fact, 2 and 3 are actually filmed in the lowest resolution of any Star Wars films. They'll be stuck at 1080p forever thanks to Lucas's cheap fat ass wanting to save a few dollars on filming costs for a billion dollar franchise.

Actually, why would you watch the piece of shit prequels at all, but I guess that's a different issue.

The originals will never be released again. His ex-wife was editor and is due a % of the profit from any release of the originals where they are the primary content. It was a very nasty divorce and he would be perfectly happy if she never saw a dime from them.

I know they were included on one version of the dvds, but it was as an "extra" and there is some legal loophole that allowed him to release it without giving her anything.

I had to check youtube to understand what you're talking about. oh my god. That is probably the worst scene in any movie made so far.

pile of shit version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEckwbj6Ud8&feature=fvsr

here is the original. notice how using real costumes and real lighting with real people adds a certain charm to it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dV0LD-QAzg0&feature=related

Oh god. The last time I saw the special editions was in ~1997-1998 when they were released in the theaters, and I don't think this scene was in them. Then I saw this on TV about two years ago and was absolutely floored. Completely flabbergasted. How in the world did anyone actually think that this was a good idea? I was speechless, as I am now having seen it again.

And after he has a good laugh for a couple of decades, he'll remove the crappy scenes and re-release it as a SPECIAL Special Edition. Cha-ching!

I never said that reviews = sales. I just find the shear volume of negative opinions very amusing. If anything, hopefully the pure number of opinions about it at least persuaded a few people into avoiding and waiting for the proper release of the films.

That explains a lot. I remember reading some quote where he said the originals would "be too cost prohibitive" to produce on BR. I thought he was just being a cheapskate prick about it...which he still probably is...but I can sort of respect that now knowing more of the history about the cuts back to the wife.

this may be the first time i've heard that explanation but it does make sense.

It seem implied when you stated "Greedy Movie Studios". If that's not what you mean, I apologize...

3000 people voted 1 star...Out of how many??? (this is a rhetorical question) I think it sold 130K copies in the first week of its release...So what does that mean?
