TC was awesome because I live in LA
I lived Downtown for four years (USC) and was sorely disappointed by the game.
1. The game isn't exactly in "los angeles," it's in a city that has exactly the same topography and street layout as Los Angeles. I realize what a huge undertaking it would be to make it EXACT but given that most streets are just endlessly repeating textures and models make the whole "OMG WHOLE CITY MAPPED IN GAME" gimmick a bit bland. I mean, USC campus is completely gone, as are many major landmarks (i.e. Shrine)
2. The AI is broken. Period. I'm sorry, but when a crook spawns on top of the freeway going the wrong direction, and endlessly rams his car into the divider until it blows up, then runs through traffic into the distance, you begin to think that maybe it needed some tweaking.
3. Logistics are flawed. Okay, so you're breaking up the FIFTH old-lady-catfight in a row, and pull up with sirens blazing. They both stick their hands up in the air. You get out to cuff them and for no reason one decides to charge you and attack you viciously -- and not only deals more damage than a 7-foot black gangster but also takes just as many hits to take down, the other one runs off down the street. Catching up to her, she turns around and whips out a gun and starts blasting you. DOES NOT COMPUTE. Random encounters aren't that random and character behavior is like GTA on "world gone crazy" mode.
4. Physics need tweaking. Most of the cars handle almost exactly the same, have sluggish steering, and do not have nearly as much variety as GTA3 vehicles. I
know that this is not GTA3 nor is it trying to be, but it can at least use it as a benchmark for 3rd party midtown driving simulations. In short, driving is a pain in the ass.
5. Clipping is broken. I've hit imaginary objects, seen people get stuck, and worst of all, I drove under a bridge only to be launched 100 feet into the air for no reason. HELLO QUALITY ASSURANCE ARE YOU AWAKE?
6. Hand to hand combat is awkward. Hard to describe, it's just clunky and could have been done better.
This is a classic case of a "Jack of all Trades" game where too much ambition and too little time make for a mediocre game. I can say that with maybe 6 more months of development tweaking this could be FANTASTIC. I'll wait for a sequel.
In the meantime, the following games have my highest reccomendations:
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (Most. Fun. Ever.)
- Manhunt (Rockstar. Enough said.)
- Freedom Fighters (old school arcadey action)
- Beyond Good and Evil (unique platformer)
