Hey guys, after having heard much talk about Oblivion, I decided to pick it up today. This happens to be my first fantasy RPG.

What advice would you give me before I embark on this game?

Read the two official threads devoted to this game.

And dont make any more Oblivion threads.
The mods get upset.

Also, its a complex enough game to warrant buying the strategy guide.
Even if you've never bought one in your life.

.. you can pick the guide up from Overstock.com for about $13.70. Bookstore will run you $20...

Start by deciding if you want a brute force character, a magic user or a thief/stealthy type character.

I have the strategy guide and it does have some really good info in it.

make sure you are okay with the dropped fps!! set your options to what you want, not what the auto-detect wants.

and be sure and patch up the game...dont want any nasty bugs ruining your experience...and save often!

but overall, enjoy the game, as its a lengthy one!

in before....

go visit elderscrolls.com forums, it contains enough information to help you out to really enjoy the game.

Don't level up too fast, minor skills are important too :)

Thanks guys! I just completed Quest 1 and I'm a Nord who is a Bard born under the Thief sign. However, I tried stealing something in Chorrol, and right as the guard caught me, the game locked up.

Don't know what happened.

make SURE it is patched!
[the official patch is out]

and DISable ALL SW - especially "Hardware Doctor" and/or anti-virus

if your rig's O/C is the slightest bit unstable, Oblivion will crash

1) look for the two threads here - one is technical, the other the 'game'
2) the Mod is likely to lock new oblivion threads

3) visit the Official Oblivion FOrums for hints

it's my first Fantasy RPG . . . i have over 580 hours into it . . . awesome game!

and it doesn't matter how you play or your 'style' . . . you can 'wander' or follow quests . . . it's 'that' good

Yes, be sure it is patched, got rid of crashes for me. Play "vanilla" Oblivion for awhile and then when/if you decide to get some mods, make sure to download OBMM (Oblivion Mod Manager)...you can get info from elderscrolls.com/forums site...it will save you lots of hassles, awesome utility.

BTW, modding the game makes it look eons better, especially the texture packs. I've got about 30-40 mods running right now and it brings a whole new life to the game, but you should play "vanilla" version for a bit first before you get addicted to mods (trust me, you will be) to see the huge differences the mods make...X360 version is totally inferior hands down.

580 hours?????????? wow you must have some dedication! even i cant put in over 100 hours in an RPG...i envy you! lol...max hours i ever got was 80 hours in final fantasy 8 and i was completely leveled and powered up with everything beaten (right up to the final boss of course).

yes....hopefully you should patch it. and yes, the patch is rather small at a couple of MBs, but it extracts and it says you should wait patiently for "up to 20 minutes". took me less than 5...

500 hours is very very common in oblivion. almost every person i've seen who likes oblivion has put at least 100 hours into it, and I know quite a few 300 hourers. i'm rather curious as to see why oblivion is such an addictive game, but i know for a fact that if i installed oblivion my computer would explode.

i played maybe 50-60 hours and got bored with it. too repetitive and combat is boring and repetitive.

yeah, 585 hours. :p
no 'dedication' . . . it is the best game currently available . . .

i wouldn't know about other Fantasy RPGs as this is my FIRST
. . . KotOR/II being my only other RPG [lite] . . . and i HATED the fighting the story was awesome, however.

and Oblivion is as boring or as interesting as you make it ;)

and "Mehunes Razor" plugin is released - today!
:)

PS: combat is anything but repetitive [unless you make it so] . . . :p

It's alot of fun. I think I'm ready to put some of the mods onto it, I'm only about 18 hours into it, but still.... And I really need to become a journeyman armorer, my enchanted stuff gets the crap beat out of it.
