Just picked up an X4 920

I'm upgrading from a BE-2400 AM2+ CPU that's been really good to me, but holding me back. I've got an X4 920 on the way in the mail and am really excited to get it up and running. But one thing just popped into my head: do I need to reinstall Windows when I upgrade the processor? I know you don't need to for most other hardware, but I remember hearing somewhere that when you install a new CPU, you should reinstall.

I'm on Vista 64 Ultimate Edition

Even an upgrade to a different chipset doesn't require reloading of Windows. I just upgraded from a 780G chipset to a 790GX chipset without having to reformat. What a beautiful thing that was!

At the very least, I would reset your BIOS. All CPU's I've had required the BIOS to be cleared.

What i've found is that if the sata controller implementation is the same you can move windows without any issues. For example p35 > p45 > p33 (all ICH10 southbridge is think) have no issues, when moving to p31 (ICH7 southbridge) or vice versa you are greated with a BSOD.

Modular, going to be an awesome performance upgrade BTW

Thanks davey and Dark. I really can't wait. I've got this CPU at 3.1GHZ right now, but it can't hold a candle to what's about to be dropped in this box. I'll finally have a relatively up-to-date system!
