I bought an HP T5710, pretty much just to mess around with, I have a thing for small computing.
It's got:
Transmeta Efficeon 1.2ghz TM8600
256mb pc2700 sodimm
512mb flash storage
16mb Radeon 7000M
Standard rear panel; 4x USB 2.0 ports, PS/2, 10/100, COM/LPT, etc. Comes flashed with Windows XPe, and has one PCI expansion slot with optional bay.
Full Specs
I'd never heard of Transmeta until now, but the TM8600 at least has SSE2 support. I read a pretty interesting article about severe thermal throttling with these chips, dropping to 866 or even 533mhz at times. That was in a laptop environment though, but it's still something I'll be keeping an eye out for when I receive it.
HP claims official support for up to 512mb of ram, no idea if it'll take up to 1gb or not though, there's only 1 sodimm slot on this board. The onboard video seems pretty decent, it has 16mb of dedicated ram and can handle 1600x1200 32-bit.
The 512mb flash storage is probably connected to a 44-pin IDE header, I've read one account of somebody adding a 2.5" HD internally with the PCI expansion bay. I may add one later if I ever want to try a full install of XP. Are there any other solutions available for installing a full OS? Maybe using a 1.8" microdrive with adapter? I've read those are kind of slow though, would it be better to just install to a USB HD?
I plan on using it along with XPe for basic web browsing so I can retire my main machine to gaming only. It should be fast enough for YouTube and other Flash heavy sites. Should I expect XPe to have the same Plug and Play compatibility as XP? It should recognize my USB hard drive right? I'd like it to be able to download files straight to the external drive if possible. Any chance of finding a torrent client that would work with XPe? I don't torrent very often so using the full tower isn't a big deal, but it would be nice to be able to have the thin client running overnight instead, save some power.
Also, what would be the best OS to pair with this thing for general use? I'm sure XPe is good enough for simple web browsing, but what would provide the best compatibility with other devices like my external HD and Linksys WUSB54G? Would a Live Boot OS like Damn Small Linux or Puppy Linux be better than XPe? I'd like to able to use WLAN with this thing since the router sits on another floor, preferably USB, but I could make a PCI adapter work as well.
Anyways it should be here tomorrow, I can post some pics of the internals if anybody is interested. I'm looking forward to playing around with this thing, I might turn it into a full fledged desktop later on by adding some kind of motorized drive and upgrading the ram to 512mb, maybe even add a PCI graphics card for some basic 3D gaming. The 7000M would probably be enough for non-HD video watching and 2D games like SC/D2 and emulators.
Anybody else own a thin client, and what do you use yours for?
