I have a Dell Insprion 600m and the monitor makes a high pitched sound... It starts and stops on its own or if I turn the monitor off and on again it is gone but returns in 30 seconds or less. Any idea how I can remedy this?

Probably some loose signal/data cable issue. This might be due to twisting of the cable. Try twisting it around a bit at the back of the monitor to see if the issue is resolved.

The 600m is a laptop, isn't it?

Have you contacted Dell?

It might need a little while to burn-in. My CRT made a high-pitched noise when i first bought it, but after a month of use, it was fine. It'll still make the noise (and it flickers) when running on UPS power, but that's not very often.

Never heard of your particular problem.

Mine only beeps loudly every now and then. And the internal fan is going out. And the screen won't come back on if I close and open the lid. And the CD drive won't read half the CD's I put in there. And the PC Card slot broke (I fixed that w/ some superglue). And the touchpad goes out intermittenly.

Other than that, my 600m is working great.

Have purchased a few notebooks from dell. Recently had some hardware replaced on one(motherboard for the 3rd time to exact), and upon getting it back, the notebook monitor made some crazy high pitched noises(kind of like what you said), and died. Notebook was replaced entireley this time, no other problems. Been through a good 20 or so different dell and gateway notebooks, and never seen that happen before.

If you have the warranty still, use it. Good luck.

Hee hee - my 600M (purchased when they had the $750-off coupon last year) is not as bad as yours, but it doesn't have the feel of something that will last forever. My only problems are tied to power management - sometimes it doesn't go into standby when I close it, and other times it shuts down completely for no apparent reason when I close it. Considering that it's been used every day for 15 months, it's not doing TOO badly, but next time I need a laptop, I'll look to Lenovo, Asus, or Apple.
